UC Irvine Records Two Singles Wins in Malibu

MALIBU, Calif. β UC Irvine men's tennis continued competition at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships with eight extra singles matches and four extra doubles contests, facing opponents from Hawai'i, Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara, Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, San Diego State and San Diego.
In extra singles action, Nathaniel Suh earned a victory over Cal Poly's Leo Matthysen, winning 6-2, 7-6 (7-4). Ruining Huang also secured a win, defeating UC Santa Barbara's Felipe Vazquez in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 10-8, rallying after dropping the opening set to claim the match in the 10-point tiebreak.
The Anteaters faced several tough matchups in the remaining extra singles contests. Mason Bui fell to Hawai'i's Kent Mueller, 1-6, 2-6, while Max Fardanesh dropped his match to Cal Poly's John Cross, 6-4, 6-2. Yashwin Krishnakumar battled UC Santa Barbara's Lorenzo Brunkow in three sets, falling 5-7, 6-0, 6-4. Holland Snell was defeated by UC Santa Barbara's Pavel Bushuev, 6-4, 6-1, while Alex Guajardo fell to Hawai'i's David Knesl in a close three-set match, 7-5, 5-7, 15-13. Dev Mangat also competed in a close contest against Pepperdine's Photos Photiades, falling 6-4, 7-6 (7-1).
The Anteaters also competed in four extra doubles matches against opponents from Hawai'i, Loyola Marymount, San Diego State and San Diego. Bui and Suh fell to Hawai'i's Simon Knezevic and Kosuke Nakanishi, 8-2. Snell and Fardanesh dropped their match to Loyola Marymount's Cesar Cruz and Emil Kindhult, 8-6, while Huang and Krishnakumar fell to San Diego State's Jan Kobierski and Piotr Siekanowicz, 8-6. Guajardo and Mangat also competed against San Diego's Botona Nagy and Luc Wieland, falling 8-4.
The ITA Southwest Regional Championships run through Oct. 20 in Malibu and serve as a qualifying event for the 2026 NCAA Individual Championships. The singles finalists and doubles champion will earn automatic bids to their respective NCAA championship events.
