IRVINE, Calif. – UC Irvine women's basketball continued its dominant start to Big West play with a 73-42 victory over UC Davis Saturday at the Bren Events Center.
The Anteaters (16-2, 7-0 Big West) extended their win streak to 15, while remaining undefeated in conference and at home (9-0). They joined the 2022-23 squad as the only two teams in program history to start the Big West season with seven-straight wins.
Â
UC Davis (12-6, 5-2 Big West) came into today averaging 70.6 points and 9.4 threes made per game. The Aggies, who ranked 12th in the nation in 3-pointers made, struggled against UCI's defense that held them to a season-low 42 points on 21% shooting and a 2-for-22 (9.1%) performance from beyond the arc.
Â
The 'Eaters pulled away in the second half where they outscored UCD, 35-17. Over the final 20 minutes, they went 40% from the field and 6-of-14 from deep, while UC Davis shot 15% and was 0-for-7 from distance.
Â
"We've been doing this long enough to know that UC Davis' three ball can go in at any time, so we really have to focus on our defense," head coach
Tamara Inoue said. "Offensively, we took what they gave us, so it was nice to see people making (threes). I thought Summah was really good today, then obviously Jada and Hunter, every game we can count on them, as well as
Lauryn Madsen. We did a good job of finding people at the right time as well. It was a good team effort."
Â
BY THE NUMBERS: Senior
Jada Wynn finished with a game-high 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting. She knocked down a season-best five 3-pointers. Wynn also had eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
Â
Senior
Hunter Hernandez recorded 19 points, four boards, and four assists. Junior

Â
UC Irvine finished the game shooting 42.3% (22-52) overall and 46.4% (13-28) from 3-point range. The Anteaters won the battle in steals (15-5), turnovers forced (20-10), and points off turnovers (20-9).
Â
Megan Norris paced the Aggies with 11 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: The first quarter was a game of runs. Hanson buried a corner three on UC Irvine's opening possession and the Anteaters kept rolling to a 10-0 lead. UC Davis then got on the board with a couple free throws at the 5:11 mark. That started a 12-0 rally that put the Aggies on top, 12-10. It was all Wynn and the 'Eaters over the final two minutes. Wynn went on a personal 8-0 spurt, while Hernandez knocked down a couple free throws with five seconds on the clock to give UCI a 20-12 advantage.
Â
UCD struck first in the second period, but UC Irvine responded with a 9-0 run for its largest lead of the half at 29-14 with 5:59 remaining. The Anteaters stayed hot from beyond the arc with triples from Hernandez, Wynn, and
Naomy Zonzon-Huyghe keeping the home team out front, 38-25, at the break.
Â
The 'Eaters took control in the second half where they outscored UC Davis, 35-17. They limited the Aggies to 4-of-26 from the field and 0-for-7 from deep.
Â
In the third frame, UCI shot 42% with three triples. Madsen had the final 3-pointer of the period to lift UC Irvine to a 20-point lead (54-34).
Â
The Anteaters put the game away early in the fourth, scoring the first seven points of the quarter. They went up by 30 on a steal and layup from Noa at the 2:02 mark, while freshman
Kianna Wormly got an offensive rebound and her first collegiate bucket with 1:28 remaining.
