Anteaters Get The Win at Cal State Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. --- UC Irvine women's soccer got three big points in Bakersfield at Main Soccer Field on a 1-0 Sunday victory

Perfect Set-Up
  • The host Roadrunners were punching early with a majority of the possession through 10 minutes bearing down on goal with four shots, but their closest thing to on target landed on top of the net in the 12th minute
  • UC Irvine responded well with four shots of their own, all on frame, including the fourth that was right on time
  • A long ball up the right wing reached the CSUB box, and Trinity Morales won it from the Roadrunner defender and traced back across goal unable to find any daylight before passing to the open Mia Colombini to finish through the hapless defender and gain the 1-0 lead in the 17th minute
  • UC Irvine built on the momentum through the rest of the half allowing only one additional shot to Cal State Bakersfield finishing with a 7-5 advantage in that category and the 1-0 lead
Grinding It Out
  • Anteater second half began with a solid push adding the first six shots in the half's first 20 minutes capped by Mia Colombini putting one on frame
  • Cal State Bakersfield found their footing driving toward goal with some chances
  • Laurynn Ziller got her first action of the match in the 76th minute on a harmless grounder
  • She was really tested in the 80th minute as a sideline set piece was launched to the right of the box, and CSUB firing a shot near post that Ziller saved on a leaping dive to keep the lead
  • The final five minutes were action-packed with Ariane Haysman Boaler firing a missile that was saved looking for a second goal in the 87th minute. CSUB followed up on the other end with a rebound put into the net, but a foul on the keeper on a 50/50 ball negated it
  • The Roadrunners nearly broke free in the 89th minute, but a Suus de Bakker diving block kept CSUB from a golden opportunity
UC Irvine 1, Cal State Bakersfield 0
  • The win UCI at 5-3-4 on the season and finish September at 3-2-1
  • Three big points in the Big West race gives UCI six through three matches and a 2-1 record
  • Mia Colombini's goal gives her four and nine points this year taking over the team lead
    • Her last two goals have now gone down as game-winners
  • Trinity Morales had a perfectly-played assist for her first as an Anteater. She's totaled four in her collegiate career
  • Laurynn Ziller was back on the shutout train giving her four and the team six this year.
    • Two more saves give her 26 this season
    • The defense held firm despite nine corner kick opportunities for the hosts
  • The Anteaters led each half in shots with seven, and overall had a 14-11 advantage including seven on goal
  • Notably, Mirayah Villalpando reached 2,000 career minutes in Sunday's match
The Anteaters return home for their next match Thursday, October 2, against UC Davis
