SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- UC Irvine women's soccer dictated the match Thursday night at Torero Stadium, but managed a 0-0 draw against San Diego.
Scoreless Through 45
- UC Irvine started strong and built up momentum throughout the first half of play recording the match's first seven shots
- The 'Eaters had their best chance in the 18th minute as Kori Pickelle broke through the defense and met the keeper off her line, but the shot was saved and deflected just high of the bar
- The Toreros managed their first shot in the final minute of the half that was saved by Laurynn Ziller.
- UCI finished the first 45 minutes with 70% of the possession
Tension Rising
- USD came out of the first shot of the second half putting up four in total including on on frame
- UC Irvine got back on the attack putting eight shots up in the second half and the biggest chance in the 83rd minute
- Following a flurry of chances including consecutive Mia Colombini shots saved, the 'Eaters fed another ball ahead with a pass finding Fiona Shin on the doorstep that she would bury, but the goal was disallowed after she was flagged for offside
- The Anteaters made a late charge with five shots in the final 10 minutes including three needing saving, but could not pull out the winner
UC Irvine 0, San Diego 0
- The Anteaters and Toreros finished in a draw for the second straight season and third time in their all-time series with tonight the 25th matchup
- UC Irvine dominated the stat sheet leading in shots (15-5), shots on target (5-2), corner kicks (8-2), and possession (63% - 37%)
- For a second consecutive match, the 'Eaters committed just two fouls. UCI has committed just 12 total fouls in their first three matches. UCI did pick up the only caution in the match
- Laurynn Ziller in net made two saves and in doing so captured the first shutout of her career
- One Anteater took the pitch for her collegiate debut Thursday night in Jasmyne Wheeler coming off the bench for eight minutes of action
The 'Eaters complete their season-opening road trip with a record of 1-1-1. Next up, they stop in for their home opener Sunday, August 24, at 1:00 p.m. against Washington before they're back out for two road matches.
