IRVINE, Calif. – Senior
Jazzmine Davis has been named the Big West Women's Track Athlete of the Meet the conference office announced Thursday afternoon.
Â
Last weekend, Davis had three podium finishes, scoring 20 individual points and contributing to 11 points in the relays to lead UC Irvine to its first Big West Women's Track & Field Championship in school history.
Â
Davis was unstoppable on championship Saturday, starting the final day of the meet by running the first leg of the Anteaters' 4x100 relay that took runner-up honors in a season-best 44.87. It was the second-fastest 4x100 time in program history.
Â
Forty minutes later, Davis placed third in the 100m hurdles with a wind-aided personal-record of 13.42. She made her way back onto the track just over an hour later for her fourth 400m hurdle race of the season. Davis stunned the field, running a lifetime-best 58.14 to become the first 'Eater to win the conference title in the 400H since 2012. Her time also moved her up to No. 3 on UCI's all-time charts.
Â
The team championship then came down to the final event with UC Irvine needing to place ahead of Cal Poly in the 4x400 relay. After the Anteaters fell behind early, Davis made up crucial ground on the third leg to help bring UCI in front of the Mustangs by .35 seconds. Their finish put the 'Eaters on top of the team standings by 1.5 points.
Â
Two weeks ago, Davis also scored in the Big West heptathlon where she placed fifth overall with a personal-record 5,368 points, which ranks third among UC Irvine's all-time leaders.
Â
Davis is the second Anteater to be named the Big West Women's Track Athlete of the Meet, joining Kayla Richardson who won the award in 2021.
