UCI Takes On Two Orange County Competitors This Weekend

IRVINE, Calif.— The Anteaters prepare for two matches this weekend against Orange County competitors in Hope International (Apr. 5) and Cal State Fullerton (Apr. 6).

  • UC Irvine went 2-1 in the last week of action, falling 4-3 in a close match to UC San Diego before collecting consecutive sweeps over Stanton and Westmont

    • UCI suffered a 6-1 setback on court three in doubles before the duo of Carolyna Fowler and Yen Nhi Huynh evened it up 1-1 with their 6-1 rout of UCSD on court two
    • UC San Diego picked up the doubles point with a 6-3 win on court one
    • The Tritons clinched the match with three straight singles victories with wins at No. 1 (6-1, 6-1), No. 3 (6-2, 6-2), and No. 4 (2-6, 6-2, 6-2)

    • The 'Eaters were dominant in singles with straight set wins over the Elks on all six courts
    • Lindsay Kim delivered the match-clinching point on court five (6-1, 6-1)
    • Three Anteaters did not drop a point in at least on of their sets (Yen Nhi Huynh, Nour Khayat, and Perez)
  • At Westmont…
    • UC Irvine collected the doubles point as Amanda Perez and Maily Huynh took down the Warriors, 6-0, on court three then Carolyna Fowler and Yen Nhi Huynh took care of business on court two, taking the 6-2 victory
    • Lindsay Kim was first to finish on the individual side, going 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 before Haily Huynh went, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3
    • Senior Kayla Meraz clinched the win for the 'Eaters with her 6-0, 6-2 win at the top of the lineup
  • UCI is looking to win three straight matches for the third time this season
  • Both Haily Huynh and Yen Nhi Huynh top the Anteaters with 11 wins, holding 11-2 and 11-3 individual records respectively
  • Maily Huynh boasts a 9-3 record in singles action while Kayla Meraz comes in at 8-4
  • The duo of Fowler and Y. Huynh won their third straight match as a pair and are now 10-2 overall
  • UC Irvine holds the 7-0 series advantage over Hope International and defeated the Royals last season, 7-0
  • Despite holding the series advantage over Cal State Fullerton, 17-10, the Titans have won ten straight meetings
 
Scouting Hope International
Hope International enters the match with a 3-13 overall record and are 1-2 in the GSAC. The Royals have dropped three straight contests with their last win occurring on Tuesday Mar. 25 over the College of Idaho, 4-3. HIU has also earned wins over Mt. San Antonio College (W, 6-3) and the University of Minnesota Morris (W, 7-0).
 
Scouting Cal State Fullerton
Cal State Fullerton heads into the contest with an 8-6 overall record and sit at 2-2 in the Big West ledger. The Titans went 2-1 last week with wins over Dartmouth (W, 6-1) and UC Davis (W, 4-1) before falling to No. 68 Long Beach State, 6-1. CSUF faces CSUN on Saturday Apr. 5 in Northridge before heading to Irvine on Sunday.
 
The Titans are led by Milena Gevorgyan in individual action who is 9-3 with most of her wins coming at the fifth spot (6-1). Gevorgyan is supported by Sein Myoung's eight wins, all at No. 1, followed by Seha Yu's seven victories at No. 2. Both Myoung and Yu are undefeated against league opposition. CSUF's top pairing competes at No. 3 where Kaitlyn Taylor and Yu hold a 8-3 record (9-3 overall) and are 3-0 in Big West play.
