UC Irvine Hits Century Mark in 44-Point Win at CSUN

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – UC Irvine women's basketball hit the century mark in a 100-56 win over CSUN Thursday evening at Premier America Credit Union Arena.

The Anteaters (17-8, 11-4 Big West) are the fourth Big West team to reach 100 points this season, but first to do so against a Division I program.

The 'Eaters were lights out in the first half, shooting 61.5% (24-39) from the field and 64.7% (11-17) from beyond the arc. They had 61 points after 20 minutes of action, more than they had scored in each of their last four games.

BY THE NUMBERS: Sophomore Shirel Nahum led four Anteaters in double figures with a career-high 18 points. She went 7-for-11 from the field including a shot from beyond half court that hit nothing but net right before the halftime buzzer.

Juniors Ines Gnahore (6-9 FG) and Hunter Hernandez (5-5 FG) both finished with 15 points. It was a season-best for Gnahore, who also pulled down six rebounds. Senior Déja Lee added 11 points and a game-high seven assists.

Sophomore Summah Hanson chipped in eight points and seven boards, while redshirt freshman Daniela Falcón Hernández had a season-best six rebounds.

The 'Eaters closed out the evening shooting 46.8% from the field and 41.2% from deep. They knocked down a season-high 14 3-pointers. UCI committed a season-low five turnovers, while forcing 20, and outrebounded the Matadors, 43-38.

Morgan Edwards paced CSUN (4-20, 2-13 Big West) with 11 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Nevaeh Dean scored the first four points of the game before 3-pointers from Hernandez, Lee and Lauryn Madsen gave UC Irvine a 13-3 lead at the 4:36 mark. The Anteaters then used a 10-2 run, which included threes from Gnahore and Hanson, to pull ahead 25-7 at the end of the first quarter.

The 'Eaters kept rolling in the second period where they scored 36 points, the second most in a quarter in program history. UCI put together an 18-4 rally over the first three-and-a-half minutes to build a 43-11 advantage. After CSUN sank a couple free throws, UC Irvine reeled off 11 unanswered to go up by 41 with 2:06 remaining. The Anteaters increased their margin to 44 (61-17) at the half after Nahum drained a shot from beyond half court at the buzzer.

The 'Eaters pushed their lead to 73-22 on a driving layup by Amelia Scharpf with 6:07 left in the third frame. The 'Eaters led by more than 40 the rest of the way. Reese Noa's jumper with 41 seconds on the clock secured UCI's first 100-point game in four years and largest margin of victory (44) this season.

UP NEXT: UC Irvine is back home on Saturday, Feb. 22, when it hosts Cal State Bakersfield in its Breast Cancer Awareness Game. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at the Bren Events Center.
