UCI Takes Third at Orange County Collegiate Classic

COTO DE CAZA, Calif. – The UC Irvine men's golf team finished third at the sixth annual Vanharte Orange County Collegiate Classic Tuesday at Coto de Caza South Course.
 
The Anteaters, who co-hosted the two-day tournament with Cal State Fullerton, trimmed an eight-stroke deficit down to three but were unable to move up in the standings. They finished with a 5-count-4 total of 873 (298-287-288). UCI was one stroke behind runner-up UC Riverside (872), while the Titans (870) took home the team title for the fourth year in a row.
 
Peicheng Chen of St. John's was the individual medalist at 6-under 210 (70-68-72).
 
Freshman Tommy Lin continued to lead the 'Eaters with a steady round where he had two birdies against one bogey for a 71 (-1). In his second collegiate tournament, Lin posted a high finish of fourth with a 54-hole score of 2-under 214 (73-70-71).
 
Junior Yaoting Zou, who was competing as an individual, also had a career-best fifth-place showing. Zou had four birdies on the day to come in at 1-under 215 (71-73-71).
 
Sophomore Jason Tang added a top-10 effort as he tied for ninth at 218 (73-73-72). Tang had six birdies, including four-straight to start the final round.
 
Junior Rei Harashima was one stroke back in a tie for 10th (76-69-74), while freshman Jack Yu had his best round of the tournament at 1-under 71 to climb 12 spots into a tie for 20th (76-76-71). Junior JJ Nakao rounded out UC Irvine's 5-count-4 lineup (231).
 
Freshman Owen Davis-Piger tied for 31st as an individual (228).
 
The Anteaters will be back in action, Feb. 24-26, when they head to the Classic Club for the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.
