Career-Highs Not Enough In Loss To CSUN

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – UC Irvine won the first two sets but could not hold off CSUN in a five set loss (25-15, 25-23, 23-25, 25-27, 10-15) at the Premier Credit Union Arena Thursday.

Four Anteaters had double-digit kills led by outside hitter Kendra Duffey's career and match-high 20 kills. She had three aces and her second double-double of the season with 13 digs.

Outside hitter Madison Triplett had a career and match-high 23 digs to lead all players.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Lois Hansen and Ally Bolden each tied their career-highs in kills with 14 and 13, respectively.  Hansen also had three block assists
>Setter Nicole Feliciano had a career-high 60 set assists to go with 11 digs
>Middle blocker Sydnee Rowe had a career-high with 12 kills and a team-high five block assists
>Freshman Izzy Romero totaled a career-best 12 digs
>Emma Napoleon had a career-high four aces and a season-best five digs
>Libero Campbell Jensen posted 18 digs
>CSUN out-blocked UCI 11-6 and out-dug the Anteaters 92-86. Both teams had eight aces
>Hailey Brockway led the Matadors with 19 kills

FIRST SET
>Three in a row by the Matadors stretched their lead to 7-4
>UCI answered with eight straight, including three kills by Ally Bolden and an ace by Madison Triplett, 11-7
>A 5-0 spurt by the Anteaters which included a pair of kills and a block assist by Sydnee Rowe increased the margin to 16-8
>Four Matador attack errors helped UCI to a 20-9 advantage
>A kill by Bolden was followed by a Matador attack error to end the set, 25-15

SECOND SET
>A Matador attack error, a dump by Feliciano and an ace by Emma Napoleon gave UCI a 9-7 lead
>CSUN would out-score UCI 6-1 to move back in front 13-9
>UCI battled back on kills by Duffey and Triplett followed by consecutive aces by Duffey, 14-13
>Great defensive effort by the Matadors helped CSUN to a 19-17 advantage
>A service and attack error by CSUN put UCI within 19-20 but the Matadors would use a kill and Anteater attack error to 22-19 forcing a UCI timeout
>Kills by Duffey and Lois Hansen and a block assist by Hansen and Rowe tied the set at 22 all
>Following a Matador kills UCI closed out the set on a kill by Duffey, CSUN attack error and a Hansen kill, 25-23

THIRD SET
>Two CSUN kills, two UCI errors and an ace helped the Matadors out to a quick 6-1 lead
>A ball trickled over the tape for a CSUN ace, 14-7
>Trailing 15-21, UCI started chipping away on kills by Duffey and Rowe and two aces by Napoleon, 20-21
>A CSUN block was timely to stop the momentum, 23-20
>Kills by Hansen and Rowe delayed the set winner by CSUN's Hailey Brockway, 25-23

FOURTH SET
>Teams would battle back-and-forth until CSUN had four in a row to move out to a 14-10 lead
>With Napoleon behind the service line, UCI had a kill each by Bolden and Elizabeth Miller and two by Duffey to tie the set at 19-19
>Following a timeout, CSUN scored the next two on kills, 21-19
>A 4-1 run by the Anteaters that included a two kills by Duffey gave UCI the 23-22 lead
>UCI would have set point on a Hansen kill only to watch the Matadors answer with a kill to continue the action
>CSUN won 27-25 on two kills and a UCI attack error to keep the match going

FIFTH SET
>A kill and two UCI attack errors gave CSUN the 6-3 lead
>Another UCI attack error and a Matador kill extended the margin to 8-4
>A kill by Hansen and an ace by Duffey kept it close, 10-13
>Two kills, the last a dig that fell to the ground on UCI's side ended the match, 15-10

NOTES
>UCI goes to 1-2 in five set matches this season
>UCI falls to 11-16 overall and 6-9 in the Big West, while CSUN improves to 15-11 overall and 8-7 in league play
