LA JOLLA, Calif. – The UC Irvine women's tennis team opened action in the main draw of the Big West Fall Selection Event with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles Thursday at UC San Diego.
 
The Anteaters got out to a strong start, winning two of their first three doubles matches. In the Round of 32, Quin Brady and Amanda Perez defeated CSUN's Angela Ho/Nicole West, 8-6. Yen Nhi Huynh and Maily Huynh also took down Madison Schwarz/Chloe Schwarz of Cal State Fullerton, 8-5.
 
Both of UCI's advancing duos came up short in the Round of 16. Y. Huynh/M. Huynh pushed Maya Youssef/Polina Marakhtanova (UC Davis) to a tiebreaker but ultimately fell, 8-7 (7-5).
 
Singles got underway in the afternoon with the 'Eaters picking up three wins. In the Round of 64, Haily Huynh made quick work of UC Riverside's Katarina Curcic, 6-0, 6-3.
 
Carolyna Fowler also came from behind to upend Cal State Fullerton's Seha Yu, 5-7, 6-2, 6-0. Maily Huynh closed out the day with an impressive 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2) victory over Allaire Berl (Hawai'i). M. Huynh, Fowler, and H. Huynh will move on to tomorrow's Round of 32.
 
Quin Brady dropped a hard-fought 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 decision to Penelope Wong (UCD), while Yen Nhi Huynh was unable to keep the momentum from a first-set tiebreaker win in a 6-7 (0), 6-4, 6-3 loss to Youssef. Amanda Perez fell to Long Beach State's Thea Jagare, 7-6 (3), 6-2.
