UC Irvine Captures Wolverine Invitational In School Record Fashion

SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah -- UC Irvine had three freshmen in the top 10 individually as the Anteaters captured the Wolverine Invitational in record setting fashion at the Talon Coves Golf Course.

It is the 18th tournament win in program history and the first since the Anteaters won the Wyoming Cowgirl Invitational at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club on Apr. 7, 2017.

UC Irvine topped the 10-team field with a score of 11-under 853 (283-286-284), the lowest 54-hole total in program history. The Anteaters were six strokes in front of second place UC Riverside (859).

UCI was led by freshman Alona Avery who finished in second place finish, carding a three-round total of 207 (69-68-70).  Avery had 15 birdies over the 54 holes, including six on the second round.

Avery's score of 207 is the third lowest in UCI history, behind Hall of Famer Jane Chin's  203 (66-68-69) set in 2008 at the Kent Youel Invitational and Megan Yang's 206 at the  Colonel Wollenburg Ptarmigan Ram Classic in 2022.

Freshman Katherine Gerbing finished fourth with a three-day total of 212 (69-72-71), while freshman Katelyn Kong was tied for 8th with a score of 216 (73-72-71) over 54-holes. The duo each totaled 11 birdies over the three rounds.

Sophomore Alyson Sor was tied for 18th at 221 (75-74-72) and junior Kiana Briggs was 24th with a total of 223 (72-77-74).

UCI heads to the Golfweek Red Sky Classic Sept. 23-25 at the Red Sky Golf Course in Wolcott, Colo.
