
UCI Tied for Second After Friday's Action at Big West Championships

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The UC Irvine women's track & field team is tied for second after Friday's action at the 2024 Big West Championships at Cal Poly's Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex.

Long Beach State (48.5) holds the slight edge over the Anteaters and host Mustangs who both have 46 points.

Jolie Robinson, who defended her Big West title in the heptathlon last weekend, claimed runner-up honors in the long jump with a personal-record 6.11 meters (20-0.5). Robinson took the lead in round five, but Cal Poly's Melody Nwagwu came back to win the title on her sixth and final attempt. Robinson moved up to No. 3 in program history.

Kailah McKenzie added a lifetime-best 6.10m (20-0.5) in the final round to make her way onto the podium. She placed third overall and ranks fourth on UCI's all-time charts. Reyna Johnson also put five points on the board, coming in fourth at 6.09m (19-11.75).

Robinson started another busy weekend in the javelin where she took fifth (41.71m/136-10).

Nyla Baker contributed three points with a sixth-place performance in the discus. Baker started the competition strong with her best mark of the day coming on her first throw that measured 45.60m (149-7).

Alana Sugue was just short of scoring position as she finished ninth in the pole vault with a clearance of 3.63m (11-10.75).

On the track, Sameen Andar made her way onto the podium in the 10000-meter run, placing third with a time of 35:02.55.

Hallena Sutherland ran a wind-legal personal-record 11.75 to earn a spot in tomorrow's 100m final. Sutherland moved up two spots to No. 4 in program history. Samantha Bartz also clocked a lifetime-best 11.78, which ranks seventh among UC Irvine's all-time leaders. Bartz missed out on qualifying for the final by .01 seconds.

Four 'Eaters advanced to Saturday's 800m final. Malia Gay led the quartet, winning Heat 3 with a time of 2:11.21. Emilie Castagna (2:11.39), Alexis Alexander (2:11.91) and Kaia Schmidt (2:12.17) were also time qualifiers as all three ran season bests.

Anna Vogtmann took third in Heat 1 to automatically advance to tomorrow's 1500m final. Vogtmann had the eighth-fastest time of the day at 4:38.03.

Jazzmine Davis and Reyna Johnson were both time qualifiers in the 100m hurdles. Davis (13.83) was sixth, while Johnson (14.07) was seventh.
