Anteaters Drop Night Two With Hawaii

IRVINE, Calif. – After winning the first set 25-22, No. 5 UC Irvine would drop the final three sets (25-27, 18-25, 18-25) to No. 4 Hawaii at the Bren Events Center Saturday.

After hitting .425 Friday night, UCI hit just .146 (42-24-123) Saturday.

HEAD COACH DAVID KNIFFIN SAID
"We came out in control of set one which was good to see then we lost traction about the time Nolan went crashing into the stands and never regained our footing. I think we learned more from this match in a loss than if we had rolled through and won with the momentum we had before that point."

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Outside hitter Hilir Henno led UCI with 13 kills. He totaled five digs, a block and an ace
>Opposite William D'Arcy recorded 12 kills to go with eight digs and two block assists
>Libero Cole Power had a team-best 10 digs
>Nolan Flexen, Connor Campbell and Maxim Grigoriev each added five kills. Campbell had a team-best five block assists followed by Grigoriev with four total blocks (1 solo)
>Hawaii hit .362 (56-14-116), out-blocking (13-9) and digging (44-40) the Anteaters   
>Hawaii's Louis Sakanoko led all players with 16 kills

FIRST SET
>UCI started with a kill by William D'Arcy from the rightside and an ace by Maxim Grigoriev, 2-0
>Three consecutive blocks, the first two by Nolan Flexen and Grigoriev and the last by Grigoriev on his own, 9-4
>A 4-1 run by Hawaii narrowed the lead to 18-17 before a kill by Hilir Henno and a Grigoriev ace increased the advantage, 20-17
>At 22-21, both teams flew around the court in an exciting rally before D'Arcy put the ball away then UH had an attack error to get UCI to set point 24-21
>Grigoriev ended the set with a kill, 25-22

SECOND SET
>UCI started with a kill by Henno and a block by Connor Campbell and Henno, 2-0
>Hawaii used a kill and block to tie the set at 5-5
>Henno would win a joust to go up 8-7
>The Rainbow Warriors answered with the next three to move in front 9-8
>Four straight by Hawaii extended their lead to 14-10
>A block by D'Arcy and Campbell, a kill by Henno, a Hawaii attack error and an ace by Henno tied the set at 14 all
>Flexen cut the ball for a kill, Grigoriev rejected a ball then had a kill to give UCI a 20-17 lead
>A pair of kills and a ball-handling error on the Anteaters helped Hawaii knot the score at 22
>UCI held set point on a UH service error before Hawaii had a kill and block to turn the tables 25-24
>Two kills by Alaka'i Todd ended the set, 27-25

THIRD SET
>A kill, ace and block pushed Hawaii in front 6-3
>The Anteaters answered with a Hawaii service error, ace by Campbell and a kill by Grigoriev, 6-6
>A 6-1 run by the Rainbow Warriors moved Hawaii to a 13-9 advantage
>Back-to-back 'Bows blocks extended the lead to 20-13
>UCI made a run with a UH service error, block by Sheward and Campbell and kill by Campbell to draw to 18-22
>Three UCI errors ended the set in Hawaii's favor, 25-18
>UCI hit .000 (9-9-32)

FOURTH SET
>Hawaii started with an early 7-2 lead after the Anteaters hit -.750 (0-3-4)
>UCI clawed back in with a Hawaii service and attack error plus a Flexen ace, 8-10
>A 5-2 run by Hawaii, which included three UCI errors gave UH a 17-11 lead
>A kill by D'Arcy, block by Joe Karlous and Campbell and kill by Campbell kept the Anteaters in it, 17-21
>Hawaii answered with the next three and went on to win 25-18

>Henno is eight aces away from Carson Clark's career mark of 183
>UCI is 17-8 overall and 6-2 in the Big West, while Hawaii goes to 21-5 overall and 4-4
