SAN DIEGO – UC Irvine women's tennis concluded their season in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Big West Championship with a 4-0 loss to top-seeded and No. 53 nationally ranked UC Santa Barbara.
Â
Carolyna Fowler and
Asha Gidwani put up a fight on court two in doubles play, keeping it close with the opposition, but ultimately fell 6-4 as the Gauchos collected the doubles point.
Â
UCSB went on two win three straight singles matches to win the match. Gidwani was able to earn a point in her No. 2 singles match while
Jenna Schlatter put up one at the No. 1 spot.
Â
Both
Amanda Perez and
Haily Huynh were up on their opponents in the second set, but walked away from the match unfinished.
Â
"I was proud of court two doubles for putting themselves in a position to win," stated head coach
Elizabeth Ferris Smith. "When they're moving aggressively, they're a dangerous team. Carolyna [Fowler] had some match points at 5-4 by playing the basics well. Both Carolyna and Amanda [Perez] were getting their opponents deep into the court and then moving up to finish at the net."

WHAT THE PLAYERS HAD TO SAY
"Today was a roller coaster of emotions. We played the last match of the season and last match of my collegiate career. Kayla has been a great doubles partner, always supportive and keeping the energy up on our court. I was proud of the way I swung through and stepped up, just like how Liz coached me to for the past four years. The team also stayed composed in singles and competed well. Shoutout to Jenna for finishing her collegiate career as well! I'm sure we will be back at the courts watching the team next year as fans." -
Emily Fowler
Â
"Today has been a tough day of competition! Regardless, I'm proud of everyone for their fighting spirit and leaving it all on the court today. I will certainly miss competing with the team, but I know they have so much success coming their way. I'm glad to have been part of such an incredible team and I'm happy I could have Emily alongside me the last four years! Go 'Eaters forever!" -
