IRVINE, Calif. – UCI poured in a dominant 7-0 effort over Hope International on Wednesday afternoon inside the Anteater Tennis Stadium.
Â
In an afternoon faced with several lineup changes and parings, the Anteaters worked together to play their game.
Â
Sophomore
Asha Gidwani was paired with graduate student
Jenna Schlatter on court two in doubles play. The duo dropped the first point but came back with six unanswered to take the 6-1 win.
Â
Over at No. 3 doubles,
Mia Totah made her first appearance since the 2021-22 season while sophomore
Mikaela Hinton had her collegiate debut. The pairing dominated as they clinched the doubles point with their 6-0 victory.
Â
UC Irvine lined up at singles with
Haily Huynh (No. 1),
Larissa Teramura (No. 2),
Carolyna Fowler (No. 3),
Emily Fowler (No. 4),
Nour Khayat (No. 5), and
Cydney Yamamoto (No. 6). This was the first time all season the Anteaters played matches at these positions.
Â
Teramura kicked off the singles points with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 for her fourth consecutive individual win. Yamamoto then got on the board with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6 to move UCI to 3-0 in the match as she earned her first collegiate win.
Â
The match for the Anteaters was clinched on court three as C. Fowler took down her opposition, 6-1, 6-0. Both E. Fowler and Khayat improved to 2-0 in singles on the year with their respective wins at No. 4 and No. 5.
Â
Huynh recorded the final UCI point of the match, but had to work hard in the second set as Maldini Simic did not back down as the match settles, 6-1, 6-4.
Â
"Nice to get a win today and use just about the entire lineup," remarked head coach
Elizabeth Ferris Smith. "We were able to get some different doubles pairings and they played focused. Simic turned it up at No. 1 singles, but Haily handled it well and closed it out."
