DANA POINT, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's golf team finished third at the Vanharte Orange County Collegiate Classic Tuesday at Monarch Beach Golf Links.
The Anteaters, who co-hosted the two-day event, combined for a 5-count-4 total of 11-under 829 (279-275-275). They were one stroke back of runner-up CSUN and four behind fellow host Cal State Fullerton, which defended its team title. The Matadors' Felix Schrott was the individual champion at 12-under 198.
Five different 'Eaters closed out the tournament with at least one round in the 60s. Sophomore
Rei Harashima led the way as he carded his third-straight sub-70 score to tie for third. Harashima finished with a collegiate career-best 6-under 204 (67-68-69). He registered a team-high 13 birdies in the tournament.
Sophomore
Yaoting Zou was sixth overall, coming in at 4-under 206 (70-65-71). Zou concluded his second round on Tuesday morning and finished with the best 18-hole score of his collegiate career at 5-under 65. He had five birdies to go along with an eagle on the par-5, 512-yard ninth.
Freshman
Jason Tang posted an even-par 210 (71-69-70) to tie for 13th.
Senior
Darien Zhao had UCI's best round of the day, firing a 5-under 65. Zhao, who had five birdies and no bogeys, climbed 27 spots in the standings to tie for 15th with a 54-hole total of 211 (73-73-65). Sophomore
Jin Nakao rounded out UC Irvine's lineup in 47th (221).
Juniors
Kevin McGough and
Joshua Lane also competed as individuals. McGough had his first sub-70 score as an Anteater in the second round, while Lane carded a season-best 71 in Tuesday's final round.
UC Irvine is back in action next Monday and Tuesday (Feb. 19-20) at the Wyoming Team Match Play tournament.
