Anteaters Struggle Offensively at Cal Poly

Box Score SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – UC Irvine was swept by Cal Poly (17-25, 12-25, 13-25) in the final road contest at Mott Athletics Center Saturday.

The Anteaters (14-13, 8-8) struggled offensively, hitting a season-low .081 (24-17-86), while Cal Poly hit .410 (43-9-83). The Mustangs also out-blocked UCI, 10-4 and held a 10-1 advantage in aces, both season-lows for the Anteaters.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>UCI was led by outside hitters Katie Smith and Kendra Duffey with five kills each
>Setter Indy De Smet totaled 15 set assists, eight digs, two block assists and two kills
>Libero Campbell Jensen had a team-best nine digs
>Cal Poly's Tommi Stockham had a match-best 19 kills, hitting .516 (19-3-31)

FIRST SET
>Cal Poly started the match with three consecutive kills, 3-0
>The Mustangs were on fire, scoring seven in a row, hitting .889 (8-0-9) with three blocks to jump out to a 10-3 advantage
>Following a timeout, UCI had a kill and ace from Katie Smith and a kill by Hunter Riedl, 8-16
>The Mustangs would stay in control, scoring the final three points of the set, the last an ace, 25-17

SECOND SET
>UCI started the set with a pair of Smith kills, 2-0
>MacDonald had a kill to make it 6-6 before Cal Poly peeled off seven straight to open a 13-6 lead
>A kill by Indy De Smet and a block by Soana Leaea and De Smet pulled UCI within 10-16 then Cal Poly would go on another 7-0 spurt, out-scoring the Anteaters 9-2 to end the set, 25-12

THIRD SET
>Three blocks and two aces helped the Mustangs to seven unanswered and an 8-1 lead
>Cal Poly never looked back winning the set 25-13 and the match 3-0
>UCI hit -.034 in the final frame

UP NEXT
UCI closes out the regular season at home next week, entertaining Cal State Fullerton Thursday (Nov. 21) at 6:00 p.m. then Hawaii Saturday at 4:00 p.m.  Both matches are at the Bren Events Center.
