UC Irvine Can't Hold Off UC Davis

Box Score IRVINE, Calif. – The UC Davis block came alive and led the Aggies to a 3-2 comeback win over UC Irvine at the Bren Events Center Saturday.

UCI (3-10, 1-1) took the first two sets 25-21 and 25-22 before UC Davis had seven blocks in the third set to win 25-19 and turn the momentum as they Aggies would win the next two 28-26 and 15-12.

The Aggies (7-5, 2-0) finished with 18 blocks, the most by a Big West team this season.

UCI out-dug (85-81) and out-aced (9-1) UC Davis, but the Aggies out-hit the Anteaters .253 (56-12-174) to .153 (67-36-203).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Hunter Riedl led UCI with 16 kills
>UCI welcomed back Ella Gardiner who put away 14 kills, which tied her career-high
>Emma Spindt had tied her career-high with 13 kills
>Outside hitter Marianna Bertolone tied her career-high with 15 digs to go with nine kills
>Libero Campbell Jensen tied her career-high with five aces while totaling and 19 digs
>Setter Nicole Feliciano recorded 39 set assists and a career-high 16 digs
>Olivia Utterback led the Aggies with a match-high 17 kills plus 12 digs and five block assists

FIRST SET
>A block by Isabella Scarlett and Hunter Riedl was followed by two kills by Marianna Bertolone to get the Anteaters out to a quick 3-0 lead
>Another kill by Bertolone and one by Emma Spindt made it 7-4
>The Aggies would chip away and go on a 5-1 run to take a 13-11 lead
>UCI would answer with a 5-1 spurt of their own, capped by consecutive kills by Nicole Feliciano, Ella Gardiner and Spindt to move back in front 16-14
>A kill by Scarlett, an ace by Campbell Jensen and a rocket off the block by Reidl pushed UCI's lead to 22-18
>Back-to-back kills by Gardiner gave the Anteaters set point, 24-19
>Delayed by two Aggie points, Spindt ended the set with a kill out of the back, 25-21

SECOND SET
>Kills by Scarlett and Gardiner and another ace from Jensen helped UCI to a 4-2 lead
>An ace by Indy DeSmet made it 7-4 and a kill by Spindt gave UCI the 13-10 advantage
>Riedl had a kill and was in on a block to extend the lead to 20-16 but UC Davis answered with the next three, 20-19
>UC Davis would tie the set at 21-21 before the Anteaters used kills by Spindt and Gardiner then after an Aggie kill and attack error, a block by Gardiner and Feliciano ended the set, 25-22

THIRD SET
>The Aggies broke open the set early with a 6-0 run, four on UCI errors, 9-2
>UCD held a 17-12 lead when UCI rallied on an Aggie ball handling error and an ace by Feliciano, 14-17
>UC Davis answered every challenge and went on to win the set 25-19
>UCD had seven blocks in the set as UCI hit .047 (11-9-43)

FOURTH SET
>UCD scored the first three points until Riedl pounded a cross court kill, 3-1
>Six in a row, which included five Anteater errors, pushed UCD to an 11-4 lead
>Trailing 18-10, UCI had six straight, two kills by Riedl to close within 16-18
>UCI continued their comeback with a kill by Emma Napoleon out of the back on a broken play, a block by Felciiano and Gardiner, a Aggie attack that was long and kills by Spindt and Gardiner, 22-20
>Three consecutive UCI errors gave UC Davis control of the set back, 23-22
>A kill by Gardiner tied it at 24-24
>A kill by Riedl tied it again at 26-26, but the Aggies would score the last two on a UCI service error and block, 28-26

FIFTH SET
>Feliciano would start the set with an ace, but UCI would fall behind 6-3
>Trailing 5-8, UCI wouldn't go away with a kill by Gardiner and an ace by Becca Sakoda, 7-8
>UCD had five of the next six points to move in front 13-8
>A kill by Bertolone and an Aggie attack error made UCD call timeout, 10-13
>An Anteater service error was followed by a kill from Riedl  and an ace by Jensen delaying the final Anteater attack that sailed long giving UC Davis the match, 15-12

NOTES
>Feliciano has five double-doubles on the season
>With five aces today, Jensen is now the team leader with 17
>UCI 0-3 in five-set matches this year
