'Eaters Stifled at Portland in 1-0 Defeat

PORTLAND, Ore. --- UC Irvine women's soccer was turned away by the stout defense of the Portland Pilots Sunday afternoon at Merlo Field falling, 1-0.

PORTLAND 1, UC IRVINE 0
  • A meeting of two defensively sound programs managed a total of 14 shots with half of them on target led by UCI with eight shots and four on frame
  • The match's lone goal came early on with a Portland cross missing the initial target and falling to Nedya Sawan on the right side of the box who would feed it back across to an unmarked Marlee Cavitt to finish in an open net in the 13th minute
  • The Pilots had a majority of the first half chance going into the locker room up, 4-2, on shots
  • UCI's offense hit the gas working to break the Pilot backline. In the 56th minute, Alyssa Moore broke free down the right wing and slid a pass across to Sophie Gillies in the six-yard box, but the pass was a bit long of Gillies' boot going wanting and keeping it a 1-0 deficit
  • The 'Eaters turned up the heat down the waning minutes starting with a cross into the box that was tapped clear by a Portland defender, but left sitting just outside the six-yard box for Emilie Castagna to run onto, but her blast was turned aside by UP keeper, Bre Norris in the 86th minute
  • UCI had one final opportunity in the 89th minute as Tati Fung got on the end of a ball on the right wing and fed it across goal to Lilli Rask who couldn't put her header on frame
  • Desiree Mendoza topped the stat sheet with a pair of shots and both on target
  • Glo Hinojosa made two saves on the day jumping from a tie for sixth in UCI history with Marissa Welliver to a tie for fifth alongside Amee Chapman at 189 career saves
  • Hinojosa also matched Jenn Randazzo playing in her 57th career match as the duo are tied for fourth all-time in matches played by a keeper
  • Gianna Creighton entered the top-10 in program history with her 71st career start as she stands even with Kathleen Lemieux, Julie Scheppele, Tracie Manz, and Nicole Harris
  • Making her first apperance in the starting lineup was grad transfer Madison Goerlinger on the backline after she made 62 at Arizona
UC Irvine finishes non-conference play with a record of 3-4-1. Next up is Big West play starting already with a Black & Blue Rivalry Series matchup at Long Beach State Thursday, Sept. 14 at 7:00 p.m.
