'Eaters, Spartans Joust to 3-3 Draw

SAN JOSE, Calif. --- UC Irvine women's soccer took to the road for the first time in 2023 and had a wild 3-3 match with San Jose State Thursday evening at Spartan Soccer Complex.

UC IRVINE 3, SAN JOSE STATE 3
  • The goal avalanche began in the 12th minute with UCI taking advantage of a slip-up. Desiree Mendoza's ball short-hopped Spartan keeper Bente Pernot, but she couldn't corral it as Sophie Gillies stepped in to possess it and feed it across the box to a crashing Alyssa Moore to tap it in and go on top, 1-0
  • San Jose State suddenly took the reins starting in the 30th minute as some errant Anteater passing in the defensive half led to a breakaway for Kennedy Mayo who would finish to Glo Hinojosa's left and tie things up, 1-1
  • Just 34 seconds later, another defensive blunder put SJSU in and Bella Focchini this time had the breakaway chance converting for the 2-1 lead in the 31st minute
  • The Anteaters got back level in the 38th minute with help from a wonderful individual effort by Emilie Castagna. She danced and darted around the midfield making space for a magnificent, 30-yard strike into the upper right to tie it again, 2-2.
  • The scoring slowed for a bit heading into the half level with each side posting four shots that were all on target
  • SJSU took its second lead of the night in the 62nd minute on their only shot of the second half. Sabrina Weinman lined up for a free kick near the top of the box and her hit was perfectly placed off the crossbar and into the netting to make it 3-2 to the hosts
  • UC Irvine kept pressing looking to equalize once again and found it in the 82nd minute. Tati Fung set up for the corner kick and laced a line drive to the near post that Laila El Behery was positioned perfectly for to head home and make it 3-3.
  • The tie is the first of the year after UCI earned seven in 2022
  • 3-3 matches the high-scoring draw in program history. This is the third 3-3 draw in the history of the program with the other two coming in the 1995 season
  • UCI's corner kick exploits continued with 10 in the match. The 'Eaters entered averaging 8.25 per match, good for 15th-best in the nation
  • El Behery's timely equalizer was her first point of the year and fifth career goal. Her most recent goal and only one of 2022 also came against San Jose State
  • Castagna's goal is her second of the season and third of her career as she matches her point total from her freshman season of four
  • Moore's goal is the 14th of her career. She's tied for the team lead with Castagna with three this season. Moore has registered a point in three of five matches
  • Assists went to Desiree Mendoza, her third already this season and seventh of her career, Sophie Gillies, her first point of 2023 and fifth career helper, and Tati Fung, her first this season, fifth as an Anteater, and seventh in her collegiate career
  • Glo Hinojosa managed the draw, her eighth all-time, and stopped two shots to giver her an even 180 for her career
  • Kiera Smeenge joined the exclusive club playing in the 50th match of her collegiate career
  • Gianna Creighton surpassed 6,000 minutes for her career in the match
