August 05, 2023 | Men's Basketball
IRVINE, Calif.-- UC Irvine men's basketball is thrilled to re-announce the addition of Carter Welling to their fall 2023 recruiting class.
C. Welling reunites with his brother Hayden Welling after spending the last two years on a mission trip. The 6'11" forward finished his high school career averaging 13.4 points per game, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.5 assists.
A two-sport athlete in high school, C. Welling won a state championship in both basketball and track. The incoming freshman was selected First Team All-State in 2021 and to the All-Tournament team while serving as the team captain for the Chargers. Much like his brother, the duo both hold the Corner Canyon school record for six blocks in a game.
"Carter committed to us a while ago and it has been great to see how he has grown through his mission trip," said head coach Russell Turner. "He is back on campus now and looks terrific. He is going to be an excellent player in our program by adding physicality, toughness, and athleticism along with great size much as his brother does. We are grateful to have both Carter and Hayden on our team."
C. Welling joins Dylan Thoerner, Derin Saran, and Jurian Dixon in the incoming recruiting class, entering the Anteater program that concluded the 2022-23 campaign with a 23-12 overall record, including a 15-5 conference record that helped secure a Big West regular season championship.
