It's Earth Day

My name is Keelan Williams, and I am a freshman on the Women's Volleyball team. I am currently majoring in Earth System Science with a specialization in Hydrology and Terrestrial Ecosystems.

Earth System Science is the study of how different environments within our planet interact, as well as how human choices can negatively or positively impact those environments. I was originally planning on majoring in Ecology and Evolutionary Sciences, but going into senior year of high school, I realized that we need to prioritize saving and preserving ecosystems and environments before we can truly focus on understanding them. This led me to choose a major in a field of environmental science, as we only have one planet, and we need to take steps to understand and reduce humans' harmful actions to the environment. Many people approach the issue of climate change with a pessimistic view, thinking that nothing we can do is going to reverse the effects of global warming. However, if we don't try to make sustainable choices, nothing will ever change.

Today is Earth Day, an important day that highlights the importance of sustainability and the necessity for environmental protection and preservation. While there are some environmentally unhealthy things that are out of our control, everybody can make sustainable choices, whether it be using less water and electricity, walking or biking instead of driving, or something as simple as recycling. It may not seem like much, but every little bit we can do to help keep our planet healthy is worth it.
