IRVINE, Calif. - UC Irvine extended its win streak to six with a 6-1 victory over Westcliff University Tuesday at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
Â
In doubles, the 'Eaters (7-6) held the early edge with
Brandon Park and
Noah Zamora taking down Max Mueller/Felix Veyhle, 6-2, at No. 1. The UCI duo has been tough to beat since making their debut on Feb. 19 as they improved to 8-2 at the top of the lineup.
Â
The Warriors (9-3) pulled even with a 6-3 victory on court two before securing the 1-0 lead in a tiebreaker at No. 3. Trailing 6-5,
Ali Amiri and
Enrique Luque Rico continued to battle, coming all the way back from down 40-15 to force the tiebreaker. The Anteaters were unable to hold onto the momentum as they ultimately fell, 7-6 (7-3).
Â
UC Irvine quickly turned the tables in singles with straight-set wins from Park and Zamora. Park was first off the court with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Mohamed Khalil at No. 2. Just seconds later, Zamora closed out a 6-0, 6-3 victory against Angel Guerrero at the third position.
Â
Over on court five, Amiri won a tightly contested first set before cruising in the second as he dispatched Mueller, 7-6 (10-8), 6-1 for a 3-1 lead.
Â
Rithvik Krishna then clinched the match with a comeback victory at No. 4. After dropping the opening set, Krishna played nearly flawless tennis the rest of the way, upending Veyhle, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0.
Â
Luque Rico also had an impressive performance at No. 1. After easily handling Arthur Bellegy, 6-3, in the first frame, Luque Rico got out to a slow start in the second, trailing 5-2. That is when he found another gear, taking the next three games with ease to tie it up at 5-5. The two sides each held serve to force a tiebreaker that Luque Rico dominated for the 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) victory.
Â
Thomas Smart finished off the singles sweep by outlasting Maxence Kupfert, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, at No. 6.
