'Eaters Out to Strong Start at New Mexico Collegiate Classic

February 03, 2023

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The UC Irvine women's indoor track & field team kicked off the weekend with 15 personal records on the first day of the New Mexico Collegiate Classic Friday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

In her first indoor pentathlon, sophomore transfer Jolie Robinson placed 11th overall with 3,540 points, which ranks third in program history. Robinson opened the meet in the 60m hurdles, clocking a time of 9.44 seconds. She then cleared a personal-record 5-04.25 in the high jump, climbing four spots to No. 6 among the Anteaters' all-time leaders.

Robinson added top-10 showings in the shot put (9th), where she notched a lifetime-best 37-01.75, and in the long jump (5th). Her leap of 18-10.5 would have been a school record if she had not already shattered the previous standard with a PR 19-02 last weekend. Robinson wrapped up the day in the 800m (2:41.23).

Sophomore Deandra Tyler set another personal best in the weight throw with a toss of 54-09.5. She improved her No. 4 mark in school history by over six inches. Tyler finished 14th among 43 competitors. Freshman DeAna Davis also moved up one spot to No. 9 on UCI's all-time charts with a lifetime-best 46-05.5.

For the second weekend in a row, sophomore Reyna Johnson established a personal-record in the long jump. Her mark of 18-08 was good for a top-25 finish in a field of 69 athletes and ranks third in indoor school history.

On the track, four 'Eaters clocked PRs in the 200m. Freshman Samantha Bartz led the way at 24.99 seconds, which puts her fifth all-time at UC Irvine. Freshmen Alana Odom (25.51) and Lauren Aquino (25.67), and sophomore Mikaela Rosario (26.37) also ran personal bests. Aquino added a lifetime-best 58.13 to place seventh in the unseeded 400m race, while freshman Sienna Frederiksen was 10th (58.39).

Junior McKenna Paulson also posted a PR 10:24.63 for a top-10 showing in the 3000m.

UC Irvine returns to the Albuquerque Convention Center tomorrow for the second and final day of the New Mexico Collegiate Classic. Action is slated to get underway with the 60m hurdle qualifying round at 8:30 a.m. (PST).
