UC Irvine Upended By UC Riverside

Box Score RIVERSIDE, Calif. – UC Irvine suffered a 1-3 loss to UC Riverside at SRC Arena Saturday.

The Highlanders won by scores of 25-15, 25-15, 10-25, 26-24 to improve to 6-20, 5-9 in the Big West. UCI goes to 8-17 overall and 6-8 in league action.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Freshman Emma Napoleon had a team-high 11 kills, hitting .419 (11-2-21)
>Outside hitter Marianna Bertolone totaled nine kills and eight digs
>Middle blocker Isabella Scarlett posted eight kills and three block assists
>Opposite Hunter Riedl tallied seven kills
>Setter Nicole Feliciano had 31 set assists, a team-high nine digs and three total blocks
>UC Riverside's Mylei Vargas -Deason led all players with 16 kills

FIRST SET
>Five straight kills gave UCR a 17-10 lead
>A UCI attack error and a kill gave UCR the 25-15 win

SECOND SET
>Four in a row, two on UCI attack errors, opened a 11-6 Highlander advantage
>An ace increased the UCR lead to 18-10
>The Highlanders would maintain control and win 25-18

THIRD SET
>UCI broke the set open on a 7-0 run which included two kills by Hunter Riedl, 11-3
>The Anteaters would out-score UCR 5-1 to end the set on a kill by Ella Gardiner, 25-10

FOURTH SET
>Kills by Marianna Bertolone and Riedl was followed by three Highlander errors to push UCI in front 14-12
>UCR answered with five of their own to take a 17-14 advantage
>A kill by Emma Napoleon and a ball-handling error by UCR tied the set at 19-19
>The Highlanders led 22-20 but UCI rallied on a kill by Gardiner and a block by Bertolone and Isabella Scarlett and a solo by Bertolone, 23-22
>UCI held set point on a slide by Scarlett (24-23), but UC Riverside would score the final three points, two on kills and the final point a block to win the match, 26-24
