LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 5 seed UC Irvine battled, but eventually fell in five sets to No. 4 Long Beach State at the Outrigger Big West Volleyball Championship Wednesday evening at the Walter Pyramid.

UC Irvine ends the season 11-19 overall, while The Beach, who won 25-16, 25-27, 25-14, 22-25, 15-10, go to 20-9.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Middle blocker Ella Gardiner led the Anteaters with 13 kills and two blocks
>Middle blocker Isabella Scarlett and opposite Hunter Riedl each pounded 12 kills with Scarlett hitting .478 (12-1-23) and rejecting two total blocks
>Big West Freshman of the Year Nicole Feliciano had her 14^th double-double of the season, posting 35 set assists and 11 digs
>Libero Campbell Jensen had a match-high 19 digs

FIRST SET
>A pair of kills and a block helped LBSU out to a 3-1 lead

SECOND SET
>A Beach service error and a kill by Isabella Scarlett gave UCI a 7-5 advantage
>A 5-1 run by LBSU, all UCI errors, moved The Beach in front 10-8
>The teams were tied at 14-14 before The Beach scored four in a row to take an 18-14 lead
>A kill and block assist by Ella Gardiner inched UCI to 17-20
>LBSU would lead 22-17 before the Anteaters rallied to close out the set on a 10-3 run, 27-25. The run included three kills by Scarlett, including the final two points

THIRD SET
>Long Beach State started with the first three points and increased the lead to 7-2
>The Beach would out-score the Anteaters 8-1 to end the set, 25-14

FOURTH SET
>An ace by Scarlett put the Anteaters in front 6-2 then a pair of Gardiner kills increased the advantage to 8-5 and forced a LBSU timeout
>Consecutive kills by Riedl, Gardiner and Nicole Feliciano forced another LBSU timeout, 16-12
>Scarlett smartly tipped a ball in the corner for a kill (20-16) before LBSU rallied to score four of the next five and close within 21-20
>The teams traded points until UCI had a block by Gardiner and Marianna Bertolone and a kill by off Beach fingertips, 25-22

FIFTH SET
>A 5-1 run by LBSU that included two kills, two UCI errors and a service ace gave The Beach a 6-2 lead
>UCI battled back into the set on a kill by Gardiner on the slide and another Scarlett tip into the corner, 4-6
>Long Beach still didn't cover the corner so Scarlett put it there again to inch to 6-7
>After Scarlett put one down on an overpass, The Beach used a kill and UCI attack error to maintain a 10-7 advantage
>A kill by Scarlett and an ace by Indy De Smet kept it close 9-10
>The Beach answered with the next four, two on kills and two on blocks, 14-9
>After a Long Beach attack went wide, Elise Agi ended the match with a kill, 15-10
