Historic Season Ends in NCAA Third Round for Women's Soccer

LINCOLN, Neb. --- UC Irvine women's soccer fell 4-0 Sunday at a rainy Barbara Hibner Field to 5-seed Nebraska ending their historic 2023 season.

  • UC Irvine finishes 2023 as the only team in NCAA history to reach the Sweet Sixteen after defeating a No. 1 seed in the NCAA First Round
  • Head Coach Scott Juniper picks up his 12th winning season and 10th 10-win season in his 16 seasons with the program as UCI finishes with a 10-8-6 record
  • The 'Eaters all-time NCAA record stands at 6-4-2 with reaching the Third Round three times in five NCAA appearances
  • The hosts took the early lead after a 50/50 ball was shot back toward UCI's box and the 'Eaters failed to clear it setting up Abbey Schwarz to finish and make it 1-0 in the 14th minute
  • Nebraska went up 2-0 in the 30th minute from a sideline cross volleyed home by Eleanor Dale. Before the half, a corner kick was whipped in and headed home by Haley Peterson to go up 3-0 in the 41st minute
  • The Anteaters had their chances as part of four shots on target in the first half. Laila El Behery had a pair in the 21st minute with her best tipped high by the keeper. Alyssa Moore had a golden chance after a failed clearance by Nebraska and her first touch was saved by the hip of the Nebraska keeper
  • After a 17-5 shot advantage in the first half by the Huskers, the pace slowed a bit in the second half with the 'Eaters on the hunt and possessing
  • UCI put up six more shots and four more on goal in the second half, but none as threatening as their first half chances with Nebraska bearing down defensively
  • The Huskers got one final tally as Eleanor Dale executed a free kick from straight on to make it 4-0 in the 87th minute
  • Glo Hinojosa stopped four shots on the match including an amazing stop on a 1v1 in the 58th minute putting her career total at 233 to go with 37 wins and 31 shutouts
  • UCI and Nebraska finished level on corner kicks, 7-7
  • Gianna Creighton finished her storied career with 87 matches played and starts, both program records, and played all but three minutes in 2023 for a career total of 7,744 minutes
