'Eaters Fall at Cal State Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. --- UC Irvine men's soccer suffered its first loss of Big West play falling 2-0 Wednesday afternoon to Cal State Bakersfield at Main Soccer Field.

CAL STATE BAKERSFIELD 2, UC IRVINE 0
  • The match was held at 11:00 a.m. in Bakersfield as the Roadrunners hosted Education Day with hundreds of elementary school students in attendance
  • The Anteaters were on the front foot in the opening half with a pair of flurries of shots going up, 6-2, on shots in the half. Two shots made it through to CSUB keeper, Brandon Limes, while UCI earned five corners
  • After 45 minutes however, the match was tied at 0-0
  • The Roadrunners went on the attack to start the second half and were rewarded with a goal in the 55th minute. A corner kick was whipped into the goalmouth with CSUB's Adrian Jogerst pouncing on it amongst a mass of players to nudge it home and put UCI behind, 1-0
  • The 'Eaters continued to press with a majority of the possession through the remainder of the half including a pair of shots on goal
  • CSUB's defense held and the 'Runners were able to add an insurance goal in the 86th minute after an unfortunate handball ruling allowed Connor Mautino to score from the spot and go up, 2-0
  • UCI finished with the shot advantage, 14-12, including eight shots on frame and a 9-3 corner kick edge
  • Eddy Berumen returned to the pitch subbing on and playing 26 minutes for his first action since being injured in the first minutes of the season's first match
  • Ricardo Ibarra played in his 70th career match for UCI and 55th start
