Riedl's Career-High 23 Kills Not Enough In Loss To Cal Poly

IRVINE, Calif. – Hunter Riedl's career-high 23 kills was not enough as Cal Poly escaped Crawford Hall with a 3-2 (25-22, 25-21, 12-25, 9-25, 16-14) victory over UC irvine Saturday.

Riedl hit .429 (23-5-42) and added four digs and three block assists.

Cal Poly improves to 15-9 and 9-3 in the Big West, while UCI goes to 7-16 and 5-7.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Middle blockers Isabella Scarlett and Ella Gardiner each had nine kills with Scarlett recording a career-best and match-high seven total blocks (1 solo, 6 assisted)
>Outside hitter Emma Napoleon totaled nine kills and four digs
>Setter Nicole Feliciano was one shy of a double-double with 45 set assists and nine digs
>On defense libero Campbell Jensen had a match-high 15 digs followed by freshman Maia Niemen with a career-best 10 digs.
>Both teams had 10 blocks, which ties UCI's season-high that they set the first time they played the Mustangs
>UCI out-hit Cal Poly .333 to .197. The .333 is the second highest percentage of the season
>UCI had nine aces, led by Jensen's three
>Tommi Stockham led Cal Poly with 17 kills

FIRST SET
>Three consecutive points gave Cal Poly a 5-2 cushion
>UCI jumped in front 7-5 on a block by Isabella Scarlett and Hunter Riedl, two Mustangs errors and an ace by Marianna Bertolone
>Kills by Bertolone and Scarlett plus a block by the duo opened a 16-12 advantage
>Cal Poly answered with five straight and move in front 17-16
>A UCI attack error and a pair of CP kills extended the Mustang lead, 20-17
>Down 19-23, UCI rallied on a kill by Emma Napoleon and block by Ella Gardiner and Nicole Feliciano, 22-23

SECOND SET
>Kills by Napoleon and Gardiner gave UCI the 8-6 edge but Cal Poly answered with a 7-1 spurt to move in front 13-9

>A service error put Cal Poly at set point 24-19
>Once again UCI battled on a Mustang attack error and a kill by Bertolone before Stockham's set-winner, 25-21

THIRD SET
>Three kills by Riedl, the last a smash on an overpass, gave UCI a 6-3 advantage
>Two more Riedl kills pushed the lead to 9-4
>Another Riedl kill and an ace by Napoleon forced a CP timeout, 14-7
>UCI expanded the margin to 20-8 on a dump by Feliciano, an ace by Campbell Jensen, two Mustang errors and a Riedl kill
>Napoleon would pound the winner, 25-12
>Reidl would have 10 kills in the set as UCI hit .429

FOURTH SET
>The Anteaters opened the set on kills by Feliciano and Scarlett and an ace by Jensen, 3-0
>A block by Scarlett and Feliciano helped UCI to a 6-1 advantage
>A 10-0 run by the Anteaters, capped by an Indy De Smet ace increased the lead to 18-5
>Reidl would record her career-best 20th kill to end the set, 25-9
>UCI hit a blistering .650 (14-1-20), while Cal Poly hit -.037 (6-7-27)

FIFTH SET
>A kill off the slide by Gardiner got the set started then was followed by kills from Bertolone and Feliciano, 3-0
>A block by Scarlett and Hunter made it 5-1
>Back-to-back kills by Riedl and Feliciano gave the Anteaters a 9-4 advantage
>The Mustangs answered on a 5-1 run to close to 10-9 and force a UCI timeout
>Consecutive kills by Stockham tied the set at 11-11
>A kill and UCI attack error gave Cal Poly its first lead 13-12
>The teams would trade points until the Mustangs used a kill and a UCI ball-handling error to end the match,16-14
