Middles Lead UC Irvine In Loss To Long Beach State

Box Score IRVINE, Calif. – UC Irvine dropped a 3-0 loss to Long Beach State (25-21, 25-20, 25-17) in a Black & Blue Rivalry presented by Duke's match at the Bren Events Center.

The UC Irvine middle blockers carried the offensive load with Isabella Scarlett leading the team with nine kills and two block assists and Ella Gardiner pitching in seven kills with two block assists.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Big West Freshman of the Week Emma Napoleon added eight kills
>Setter Nicole Feliciano added another double-double with 17 set assists and 10 digs. She also had two kills and a block assist
>Libero Campbell Jensen totaled a match-high 12 digs
>LBSU out-hit UCI .345-.179 and out-blocked the Anteaters 7.5-3.0
>The Beach, who leads the league in serving, held an 8-3 advantage
>Katie Kennedy hit .688 with a  match-best 12 kills

FIRST SET
>The teams stayed close until LBSU out-scored UCI 6-1, including two Katie Kennedy kills, a block and a service ace to go up 15-10
>Long Beach State held set point 24-18 but UCI kept battling on a Beach attack error, a kill by Nicole Feliciano and an ace by Lexi Gruszczynski, 21-24
>After a LBSU timeout, Kameron Bacon ended the set 25-21

SECOND SET
>Four straight kills by LBSU was followed by an Anteater attack error to give The Beach a 9-4 advantage
>Two Beach errors drew UCI within 13-16 then two Isabella Scarlett kills and a block by Scarlett and Hunter Riedl edged the Anteaters to 17-18
>Long Beach State answered with the next two and would go on to win 25-20

THIRD SET
>Long Beach State scored three in a row to move in front 5-2
>Down 5-13, UCI rallied on a pair of kills by Scarlett and three Beach miscues, 10-14
>A kill by Scarlett and an ace by Campbell Jensen pulled UCI to 13-19
>The Beach answered with the next three (23-13) but the Anteaters wouldn't go away easily scoring three of their own including an ace by Jensen and a kill by Emma Napoleon forcing a LBSU timeout, 16-23
>A service error delayed the LBSU win, 25-17

NOTES
>Jensen added to her team leading ace total (19) with one of UCI's three tonight
