IRVINE, Calif. – Joy Umeh led UCI with 12 kills and Onye Ofoegbu totaled eight block assists in a 3-0 win (25-14, 25-21, 26-24) over Sacred Heart at the adidas/UCI Invitational at the Bren Events Center Friday
Umeh had three blocks assists to go with her match-best 12 kills, while Ofoegbu put away 10 kills along with her match-best block total.
The Anteaters won their third consecutive match and go to 3-2 on the year, while Sacred Heart falls to 1-4.
UCI out-hit the Pioneers .326 to .136 and held a 10-3 advantage.
COACH ASHLIE HAIN SAID:
"I'm most proud of our serve and pass game today. I think as a team we buy into how important that part of the game is right now. We still have a lot of room for improvement in other parts of our game but we have personnel to be good in all aspects of the game."

>Opposite Ellen Veargason hit .600 (6-0-10) and recorded five block assists
>Outside hitter Emma Spindt had six kills, while libero Campbell Jensen tallied a match-high 15 digs

>Kelly Negron served the first five points which included two Joy Umeh kills, 5-0

>Three straight Pioneer errors stretched UCI's lead to 20-7
>The Anteaters would win 25-14 on an Veargason kill

SECOND SET
>UCI scored six unanswered which included consecutive kills by Kiani Stanton, Ofoegbu and Emma Spindt as well as a block by Ofeogbu and Joy Umeh and an ace by Campbell Jensen, 9-2
>Kills by Umeh and Marianna Bertolone opened a 16-10 gap, but Sacred Heart battled back to close within 17-15
>UCI would never relinquish the lead and a block by Stanton and Spindt ended the set 25-21
THIRD SET
>Sacred Heart would be in command to start the set, 6-1 with the help of three Anteater errors
>Behind the serving of Indy DeSmet, UCI would rally and knot the set at 7 all
>The Pioneers would lead by as much as 14-11 before the Anteaters made another charge using an Ofoegbu kill to knot the set at 17-17
>SHU would sneak out to a 22-20 advantage forcing a UCI timeout. Out of the break, a kill by Spindt was followed by a block by Ofoegbu and Umeh and a Pioneer attack error, 23-20
>A block by Ofoegbu and Veargason would win the set 26-24 and the match, 3-0
