· The week started with a home match vs. San Diego, a team that UCI matched up with in an exhibition winning, 2-0, at their place. This time, the Toreros got the better of it in Anteater Stadium scoring in the 78th minute for a 1-0 win in a match that leaned heavily on both defenses.
· The Anteaters were scheduled to play on Sunday evening at CSUN, but it was put on hold. Minutes before the match, CSUN Athletics and the CSUN Police were notified of a potential threat of violence directed at the CSUN campus.
· The match was finally held Monday night in the second straight season of a UCI vs. CSUN non-conference tilt, and again UCI came away with the 2-1 victory.
Sophie Gillies opened the scoring with a 10th-minute goal set up by
Alex Jaquez and
Aislynn Crowder, and Jaquez was on the scene again with
Lilli Rask for
Desiree Mendoza's header goal in the 49th. CSUN closed late with a penalty kick with 33 seconds left, but the 'Eaters put a halt to any comeback ideas.
· The freshman twins, Ella and
Mia Colombini, have already seen the pitch together for a total of 112:20 this season. UCI's other set of twins, Mihaela and
Jenae Perez played 88:35 together in 2021, but only one has had any minutes in 2022 with Jenae played 20 minutes over three matches to this point
· The Anteaters have a trio of players closing in on the illustrious mark of 50 career matches played at UC Irvine, something 91 Anteaters have reached.
Destinee Manzo enters the week three matches away at 47 followed closely by
Gianna Creighton and
Maddy Chavez each at 46 career matches.
Lilli Rask has 44 career matches played overall between the University of Oregon and UC Irvine with 29 as an Anteater and 15 as a Duck. Current 'Eaters
Amber Huff and
Alex Jaquez have surpassed 50 with Huff hitting 60 Monday and Jaquez two away from joining her.
· UC Irvine heads to USC on Thursday for the final non-conference matchup of 2022 on Pac-12.com. The Trojans are unbeaten in their last four and 3-1-1 overall which includes clean sheets at LBSU and CSUN. The last meeting in 2018 was a 1-0 USC win in front of a record-breaking Anteater Stadium crowd. The 'Eaters also drew at USC in a 2017 exhibition and also in 2014. UCI is looking for its second-ever win and first at USC in the series. The Women of Troy have leaned on senior Croix Bethune (2 G, 3 A) and sophomore Simone Jackson (3 G, 1 A) for most of their 2022 scoring.
· Big West play begins Sunday at UC San Diego. The Tritons are 1-5-1 including a 2-1 loss to Cal and played Wednesday vs. USF before matching up with UCI. The Tritons won at UCI last year in the first-ever conference meeting, and last year's winning scorer, Kennedy Carter, is back leading the charge with two goals and one assist.
