· The opening week of the 2022 season was not kind to the Anteaters having to play twice on the road against opponents ranked in the top 25. UCI began with No. 23 UCLA coming up short in a 1-0 defeat Thursday. The weekend ended in Springfield, Missouri against No. 19 Missouri State in a 3-0 loss, the first time in three all-time matches that the 'Eaters and Bears did not draw. This marks the third straight season UCI has opened against a ranked opponent. All-time, the program now has 79 matches against top 25 foes winning 23 times and drawing eight.
·Â
Luke Pruter made the biggest impact last week with 11 saves in the two matches. Pruter stopped seven shots Sunday at Missouri State giving him three games of seven or more saves in his eight career matches. He averages five saves per match with 40 career saves on 103 shots faced
· Anteater debuts were all over the first weekend. Two prominent transfers,
Robert Mejia and
Samuel Atiye, each played in both matches with Mejia starting each and Atiye making his UCI starting debut Sunday. Freshmen
Agaton Pourshahidi and
Diego Otoya also appeared in both matches with Pourshahidi starting twice for his collegiate debut and Otoya starting the opener at UCLA. One other debut was
Isaac Powell as the freshman subbed off the bench in both matches.
· UC Irvine men's soccer begins its 38th season. All-time, UCI is 21-12-5 in season openers after its loss at UCLA. UCI has started on the road in six straight seasons winless (0-5-1) in those matches. The 'Eaters are winless in home openers under coach Raz at 0-3-1. UCI had one 13 straight prior to 2017 dating back to 2004.
· Anteater Stadium opens for men's soccer Friday in the first of a doubleheader with women's soccer at 5:00 p.m. UCI hosts Cal who is 0-1-1 through the first two falling at Cal State Fullerton, 3-1, before drawing, 1-1, with Villanova in Berkeley. The 'Eaters and Golden Bears last met in 2019 with a draw to open the season, 1-1. All-time, Cal holds a 4-3-2 record, but have been to UCI just once, in 1996 where the sides drew, 2-2. Cal was 3-9-3 in 2021 and are projected to be sixth in the Pac-12.
· UC Irvine continues the homestand with a Labor Day matchup welcoming in Ivy League school, Cornell. The 'Eaters and Big Red have never met, and for the 'Eaters it's the fourth matchup all-time with the Ivy League beating Princeton once and going 1-0-1 vs. Brown including a win in 2018. The Big Red plays UC Santa Barbara Friday to begin their season. Forward Eneka Emeli returns as an All-Region honoree as Cornell was projected to finish third in the league behind Princeton and Yale after an 11-3-2 season a year ago.
