Chau Highlights First Day of Steve Scott Invite

Hannah Chau led the UC Irvine women's track & field team on the first day of the Steve Scott Invitational Friday at Anteater Stadium.
 
In her first career 3000m steeplechase, Chau ran the second-fastest time in program history. She won the event in 10:36.58, putting her just .19 seconds behind the school record set by Lauren Chramosta in 2009. Maggie Sczupak also clocked in at 11:36.36 in her first steeple, while Nikki Fulcomer notched a personal-best 11:51.21.
 
In the 5000-meter, Sameen Andar ran a 12-second personal-record to finish fourth overall, and second among collegiate athletes. She crossed the finish line in 16:44.70, which ranks eighth on UCI's all-time charts. Evelin Meza was also 11th overall in her season debut (17:29.63), and McKenna Paulson was right on her heels in 12th, registering a lifetime-best 17:29.89. Tea Akiaten, who won Heat 2, contributed a top-25 showing.
 
Kassidy Sani earned her second-straight victory in the javelin, finishing ahead of the pack with a personal-record 143-07. That mark moves her up to No. 3 in school history. Sani threw for over 140 feet on three of her six attempts. She opened the competition with a lifetime-best 142-10 before surpassing that mark by nine inches on her final throw of the meet. Laura Lindquist came in sixth at 122-04.
 
Sani was also sixth in the hammer (154-10), while Deandra Tyler was 11th (140-06).
 
Chaselyn Amos led the 'Eaters in the long jump with a personal-best 17-09. Shaelyn Amos added a PR 16-08.75.
 
UC Irvine returns to Anteater Stadium tomorrow for the second and final day of the Steve Scott Invitational. Action gets underway with the high jump at 11 a.m.
