Anteaters Tie for 12th at Western Intercollegiate

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -
The UC Irvine men's golf team wrapped up the 75th Western Intercollegiate in a tie for 12th Wednesday at Pasatiempo Golf Club.
 
The Anteaters put together their best round of the three-day tournament at 9-over 359. They tied 12th-ranked Stanford with a 6-count-5 total of 1135.
 
No. 9 Texas edged eighth-ranked Pepperdine by one stroke for the team title at 1075 (+25). The Waves' Dylan Menante was the only player to finish below par, claiming individual medalist honors with a three-round total of 1-under 209.
 
Nathan Irwin led the 'Eaters as he carded a 68 (-2) to climb 22 spots in the standings. Irwin finished in a tie for 51st with a 54-hole score of 227 (83-76-68).
 
Matt Gunson also tied for 61st with a 229 (77-78-74). Gunson got out to a strong start in the final round, making the turn at 2-under, but was unable to carry that momentum through the back nine.
 
Henry Fitzhugh (77-78-75) and Kolbe Irei (79-74-77) tied for 67th at 230, while Darien Zhao bounced back from a tough outing on Tuesday with a 2-under 68 to move up 12 spots into a tie for 74th (232). Zhao has now finished below par in five of his last nine rounds.
 
Johnny Bai rounded out UCI's lineup in 78th (234).
 
Up next for UC Irvine is the Big West Championships in La Quinta, California, May 1-3.
