CARLSBAD, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's golf team is in fifth place after two rounds of the UC San Diego Invitational at La Costa Champions Course.

The Anteaters finished Monday's action at 2-under 574 (286-288). They are only three strokes behind Utah State and Weber State, who are tied for third. Host UC San Diego leads the 14-team field at 17-under 559, while Sacramento State sits in second (565).

Darien Zhao was UCI's top performer on the day, carding a 5-under 139 (69-70) to tie for third. In the opening round, Zhao was at 1-over before firing five birdies over the final eight holes to finish with his fourth sub-70 score of the season. He closed out the two rounds with a team-leading 11 birdies.

Kolbe Irei also came in below par as he is tied for 20th at 1-under 143 (72-71).
Nathan Irwin isn't far behind in a tie for 26th at even-par 144 (71-73). After starting the first round with a double bogey, Irwin settled in with a clean scorecard the rest of the way as he finished the first 18 with three birdies and 14 pars.

Henry Fitzhugh had back-to-back rounds of 74 to tie for 43rd (148), and
Matt Gunson rounded out the 'Eater lineup in a tie for 80th (158).

UC Irvine returns to La Costa Champions Course tomorrow for the final round of the UC San Diego Invitational which will have a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
