Anteaters Play at Chapman, Caltech This Week

UCI returns to Southern California for a pair of midweek trips to Division III opponents with the Panthers and Beavers.

Storylines
  • UCI played three times over the weekend earning their first victory Saturday at George Fox
  • The Anteaters have started with six of their first seven matches away from home
  • Two of UCI's first four matches were Big West contests including the season opener at UC Davis. The 'Eaters will play its first home Big West match February 20 vs. UC Riverside
  • UCI secured nine singles points on the weekend for 14 dual match wins this season
  • The Anteaters have won three doubles points in seven matches
  • The duo of Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico and Jenna Schlatter lead all Anteaters with a 2-2 doubles mark at No. 2, Gonzalez-Rico is 4-2 overall in doubles matches
  • Every position has won a singles point this season with the most coming at No. 4 winning four of six finished matches
  • The Anteaters competed in three fall tournaments and the CSUF Spring Invite to start 2022 taking home a total of 27 singles wins and eight doubles wins
  • The women's tennis squad finished the fall quarter with the highest grade point average in UCI athletics. "This team takes great pride in their studies and I'm so happy they are being recognized for all their efforts. This is quite an impressive accomplishment," praised coach Ferris.
  • Five Anteaters were among the 113 student-athletes on the Fall 2021 Dean's List - Dasee Carter, Megan Mansonhing, Shreya Pavani, Mia Totah, and Jessica Tsukiji - by taking 12 or more units with a 3.500 GPA or higher

  • The 'Eaters went 1-2 with losses to Seattle U and Portland State securing its first win of 2022 at George Fox
  • Emily Fowler was an unbeaten 2-0 in three matches and won a doubles set
  • Megan Mansonhing and Shreya Pavani each won their first singles matches
  • UCI is 4-2 at No. 2 doubles this year with an overall doubles mark of 8-12
  • Dasee Carter made her 2022 debut helping score the doubles points with partner Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico
  • UC Irvine was swept, 4-0, in its final match of the weekend to halt a streak of six straight matches scoring a point to start the year and multiple points in four of those

Chapman Panthers
Division III Chapman begins their season Wednesday against UCI in its first match since their 2020 season was cut short where they were 2-4. They squared off that season as well with UCI winning, 7-2, with both Panther points coming in doubles wins.

The 12-player Panthers roster returns just three players from that 2020 season in their Nos. 1, 2, and 3 singles players, Tatum Phillips, LIza Antonova, and Aliya Allyn. Senior Phillips was 4-2 at No. 1 in 2020 with Antonova and Allyn each winning a pair of singles matches and teaming up to go 4-2 in doubles play.

Caltech Beavers
UCI plays another Division III opponent Friday traveling to Caltech. The Beavers are 1-1 so far in 2022 falling to Biola with a win at Westmont. The Beavers are also playing for the first time since 2020, but it included a 6-3 win over UCI.

The six-player squad from 2020 has grown to 14 players including four returners in seniors Anna Tifrea, Jennifer Yu, Michelle Hyun, and junior Nina Solovyeva. Tifrea led the charge in 2020 going 4-1 from No. 1 singles. Freshman Yochana Benchetrit is 2-0 through singles in 2022 this year.
