Umeh Lifts UC Irvine Over Titans, 3-0

Box Score FULLERTON, Calif. – Outside hitter Joy Umeh led UCI to a 3-0 (25-12, 25-22, 25-22) victory over Cal State Fullerton at Titan Gym Friday evening.

Umeh had a match-best 17 kills, hitting .395 (17-2-38).

The Anteaters, who improved to 17-10 overall and 10-7 in the Big West, out-hit the Titans .291 to .212.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Middle blocker Onye Ofoegbu hit .529 with 10 kills. She added three blocks
>Freshman Kendra MacDonald added eight kills and three total blocks (1 solo, 2 assisted)
>Kelly Negron had a team-best 13 digs to go with 23 set assists and an ace
>Lyla Traylor led the Titans (12-13, 6-11) with 15 kills

FIRST SET
>UCI got out early on a 4-1 run, using kills by Kendra MacDonald and Joy Umeh, an ace by Campbell Jensen and a block by Onye Ofeogbu and K. MacDonald
>The Anteaters would score eight straight, three on Umeh kills and three on K. MacDonald kills, 17-7
>Indy DeSmet would have an ace on the way to a 25-12 victory
>UCI hit a scorching .471 (18-2-34)

SECOND SET
>The Titans started with an 8-2 lead helped by four UCI attack errors
>UCI would score five in a row on the strength of kills by Umeh, Ofoegbu and Ellen Veargason to draw within 8-7
>A kill and two UCI attack errors extended the CSF lead to 15-10
>A 5-1 spurt by UCI gave UCI its first lead of the set, 20-19
>A kill by Marianna Bertolone, a block by Kiani Stanton, a Titan error and a kill by Umeh got UCI to set point, 24-20
>Cal State Fullerton would not go away easily, scoring the next two to force a UCI timeout, 24-22
>A long rally ended with an Umeh kill, 25-22

THIRD SET
>A kill by Bertolone and an ace by Kelly Negron was part of a 4-0 run to give UCI the 9-5 advantage
>The Titans turned the tables and scored seven straight to move in front 13-11. Five of the points came on Anteater errors
>Three more by CSUF moved the lead to 18-14
>A kill by Ofoegbu was followed by two Titan errors to close within 18-17
>Stanton would tap down an overpass to tie the set at 19-19
>Back-to-back kills by Umeh and K. MacDonald gave UCI the 22-20 advantage
>A CSF attack error was followed by a K. MacDonald kill for the 25-22 win

>It is the 12th 3-0 victory of the season
>UCI has recorded 10 or more conference wins four of the last five seasons
>Reigning Big West Freshman of the Week, Campbell Jensen, had 11 digs

UP NEXT
The Anteaters return home to host Long Beach State tomorrow (Nov. 19) at 5:00 p.m. in the Bren Events Center. UCI will honor the seniors in their last home match following the contest.
