UC Irvine Runs Into Hot-Hitting Hawaii

Box Score HONOLULU, Hawaii – UC Irvine was swept 3-0 (17-25, 19-25, 13-25) by league-leading Hawaii at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center Friday night.

The Rainbow Wahine hit .471 (56-8-102) to stay unbeaten in Big West action (5-0).  UH is 8-5 overall, while UCI goes to 10-6 on the year and are 3-3 in conference play.

Serving was also a key as Hawaii had 5 aces to UCI's 1.

INISDE THE NUMBERS
>UCI was led by middle blocker Onye Ofoegbu's 11 kills and four blocks. She hit .474 (11-2-19)
>Outside hitter Joy Umeh added 10 kills
>Opposite Ellen Veargason had a team-high four block assists
>Libero Campbell Jensen recorded a team-high seven digs
>Hawaii middle blocker Amber Igiede had 16 kills without an error, hitting .667 and two blocks. Tiffany Westerberg hit .800 (12-0-15).

FIRST SET
>UCI started with a quick 3-1 lead on a kill by Marianna Bertolone, but UH answered with four straight to move in front 5-3
>Seven straight by Hawaii extended UH's lead to 16-6
>An ace by Onye Ofoegbu and a block by Kiani Stanton and Bertolone made it 16-9
>UCI kept chipping away with a kill and block assist by Ellen Veargason, 22-14
>Hawaii would close it out 25-17

SECOND SET
>A Veargason kill gave UCI a 6-4 advantage
>Hawaii would tie the set 7-7 on a block
>A kill by Joy Umeh and a Hawaii attack that sailed wide helped UCI to a 10-8 advantage
>The Rainbow Wahine would score the next three to gain command, 11-10
>Hawaii would move ahead 20-15 on the strength of a 7-1 run
>UH would win 25-19

THIRD SET
>Hawaii would get some separation on a block, 10-6
>Six unanswered edged Hawaii closer to finishing the set, 23-12
>A block ended the night 25-13

>Hawaii is 44-1 all-time versus the Anteaters
>Ofoegbu has recorded kills in double-digits in all, but two matches this season
>It is only the second time this season UCI has been swept
