 · The week began on a high note with the 'Eaters snagging their first win of the year at home vs. Cal State Fullerton. A wild match of five goals saw the Titans take leads at the 24th and 58th minutes. The 'Eaters roared back with
Robert Mejia's first UCI goal in the first half, and a late surge led by
Agaton Pourshahidi's brace in the 73rd and 89th minutes to take the 3-2 victory to open Big West play.
· The week ended with the final match playing Sunday evening at Cal Poly. After taking the lead in the 19th minute from a brilliant play between
Mario Anaya and
Ashish Chattha, but UCI could not sustain it allowing goals in the 24th and 33rd minutes giving the Mustangs their first win of 2022, 2-1.
· The Anteater scoring leader is clearly
Agaton Pourshahidi after his first career brace. His three goals account for one-third of UCI's scoring putting three of his four shots on goal into the back of the net, and added his first career game-winner. It was good enough for his second Big West Freshman of the Week honor joining the award he claimed on September 19 after scoring his first goal at Vermont.
· UCI filled up the scoresheet with first goals of 2022 for Mejia and Chattha. Five different 'Eaters assisted on goals Wednesday.
Luke Pruter now has 45 saves with 11 in conference play - three more than any other keeper through two matches.
· The opening week of Big West play did not decide much. UC Santa Barbara can out as the only team to win both matches standing alone with six points. The only winless, drawless squad Cal Poly earned one of each to sit in second with four points. Then there is a six-team pileup with three points each with UC Davis earning one point and zero points to CSU Bakersfield pulling up the rear.
· The Anteaters continue their road trip up to UC Davis for second trip up the coast in four days. The Aggies struggled to open Big West drawing with Cal Poly and falling at UC Riverside. Like UCI, they have just one win which came at Pacific in a schedule that included top-5 Oregon State and Stanford games and common opponents Saint Mary's and LMU losing by identical scores. Cason Goodman is the only Aggie with two goals while 29 of the team's 100 shots are from Ethan Hoard
· UCI comes back home to play Sac State on Saturday who has enjoyed a solid season at 6-3-2 including wins over Saint Mary's and LMU. Big West play began on the road defeating CSUB and UCSD and returns home to play CSUN before heading to UCI. The Hornets have 19 goals with Francisco Magana's four leading the charge and six others with two. The keepers, Edgar Guerra and Mac Learned have shared time allowing 16 goals and posting a .652 save percentage.
