UC Irvine Finishes Sixth at Nick Watney Invitational

FRESNO, Calif. - 
The UC Irvine men's golf team remained in sixth place through the final 18 holes of the Nick Watney Invitational Tuesday at San Joaquin Country Club. 

The Anteaters combined for a 5-count-4 score of 872 (292-289-291) in their season-opening tournament. Cal State Fullerton was 5-under in the final round to take the team title with a total of 845 (-7). Sacramento State was five strokes behind in second, while host Fresno State was third (854). The Hornets' Ethan Davidson was the individual medalist, coming in at 7-under 206.

Sophomore Darien Zhao was UCI's top finisher as he tied for 15th at 3-over 216 (73-69-74). Senior Nathan Irwin added a top-20 showing, climbing five spots in the standings on the final day. He tied for 19th with a 54-hole score of 217 (71-74-72). 

Freshman Jin Nakao (72-74-75) and sophomore Kolbe Irei (76-73-72) tied for 31st at 221. Irei had his best round of the tournament, carding a 1-over 72 to move up 15 spots on the leaderboard. 

Sophomore Henry Fitzhugh rounded out the 'Eater lineup in a tie for 36th with a three-round total of 222 (76-73-73). 

Competing as an individual, freshman Johnny Bai also tied for 27th at 220 (71-74-75).  

UC Irvine continues its fall slate in two weeks when it makes its way to Valencia, California, for the Bill Cullum Invitational, Oct. 11-12.
