Anteaters in Sixth Place after Two Rounds in Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. -
The UC Irvine men's golf team is in sixth place after two rounds of the season-opening Nick Watney Invitational Monday at San Joaquin Country Club.
 
The Anteaters combined for a 36-hole score of 581 (292-289) on the par-71, 7,001-yard course. Host Fresno State is in first at 8-under 560, while Cal State Fullerton, Sacramento State and CSUN are all tied for second, sitting six strokes behind the Bulldogs.
 
Sophomore Darien Zhao leads the 'Eaters in a tie for 15th at even-par 142. After four bogeys over his first 11 holes, Zhao settled down, closing out the opening round with a 73 (+2). He carried the momentum into the second round where he fired a 2-under 69, jumping 19 spots on the leaderboard. Zhao tied for the team lead with six birdies.
 
Senior Nathan Irwin shot a 145 (71-74) to tie for 24th. He also had six birdies, four of which came in the first round.
 
Freshman Jin Nakao is tied for 31st at 4-over 146 (72-74), while sophomores Kolbe Irei and Henry Fitzhugh both carded a 149 (76-73) to tie for 46th.
 
Competing as an individual, Johnny Bai is tied for 24th (145). He shot an even-par 71 to tie for 13th in the opening round, bouncing back from an early double bogey with three birdies over his final nine. He ended up dropping 11 spots in the standings following a second-round 74.
 
UC Irvine returns to San Joaquin Country Club Tuesday morning for the final round of the Nick Watney Invitational. Action will get underway with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
