Electric Crowd Watches UC Irvine Sweep California Baptist

Box Score IRVINE, Calif. – In an electric Bren Events Center, UC Irvine swept California Baptist 3-0 (28-26, 25-20, 25-21) at the Big West/WAC Match-Up in front of 1,304 fans which were mostly UCI students.

The Anteaters improve to 7-3 behind reigning Big West Offensive Player of the Week Onye Ofoegbu's 16 kills. The middle blocker did not commit an error in 26 attempts (.615) and totaled a match-high six block assists.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Outside hitter Joy Umeh added 12 kills, her sixth double-digit kill performance of the year
>Outside hitter Grace Colburn had a career-high nine kills to go with eight digs
>Freshman setter Indy DeSmet made her first career start and totaled a career-high 23 set assists and nine digs
>Libero Carly Richter had a match-best 14 digs, while Sofia Skukan helped the Anteaters defense late with eight digs
>Opposite Ellen Veargason pitched in four kills and five block assists, which matches her career-high at the net
>UCI out-hit (.310-.194) and out-blocked (8-3) CBU
>The Lancers (5-5) were led by Anna Jackson and Christine Graf with eight kills each

TURNING POINTS
FIRST SET

>Back-to-back kills by Joy Umeh and Grace Colburn plus a CBU ball-handling error gave UCI an early 6-3 lead
>Three consecutive kills by the Lancers would knot the score at 6-6
>California Baptist would lead 15-13 at the media timeout before UCI came alive with kills by Onye Ofoegbu and Colburn followed by a CBU blocking error to regain the 17-16 lead
>With the score tied at 21-21, CBU peeled off three in a row to take the 24-21 lead
>The Lancers held set point 24-22 then UCI made their move on kills by Colburn and Ofoegbu to knot the score at 24-24
>Another Ofoegbu kill gave UCI their own set point, 26-25
>After a CBU kill, the Anteaters used kills by Ofoegbu and Ellen Veargason to win 28-26

SECOND SET
>CBU would hold a 7-4 lead, but an ace by Marianna Bertolone would tie the set at 10-10
>The set remained tight until UCI got some separation on a kill by Stanton and two by Umeh, 19-16
>Umeh would take over putting away three straight kills to increase the lead to 22-17 and force a CBU timeout
>Ofoegbu would tap down the set winner, 25-20

THIRD SET
>A pair of kills by California Baptist gave the Lancers an 8-6 advantage
>A 4-1 run by CBU, which started by a ball falling between two UCI players, helped the Lancers to a 14-10 lead
>A pair of CBU attack errors and a kill by Veargason moved UCI within 15-16
>An ace by Carly Richter tied the set at 20-20
>Back-to-back blocks, both involving Ofoegbu, increased UCI's lead to 23-21
> A kill by Colburn landed UCI at set point then another block by Ofoegbu and Veargason ended the set 25-21 and the match, 3-0
