IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine men's soccer played its first match in Anteater Stadium since 2019 in an exhibition against Cal Poly Pomona playing 110 minutes to a 1-1 draw Saturday night.
The sides agreed to 110 minutes over three periods as head coach
Yossi Raz faced his former assistant, Matt O'Sullivan, on the Bronco side..
The scoring started in the 21st minute as Cal Poly Pomona struck first. An initial shot was stopped by UCI keeper
Luke Pruter, but the rebound fell to Paul Henschke who put home the goal for the 1-0 lead.
UCI nearly equalized later in the first half as
Mario Anaya stepped up for a free kick from just outside the box and curling it off the near post and out to keep it a one-goal deficit.
The match stayed that way until the final 20-minute period as the 'Eaters finally evened things up. A Bronco turnover in their own half gave
Jake Means a chance 1v1 finishing inside the right post from the top of the box.
All three keepers saw action for the 'Eaters with Pruter stopping five shots in the opening period,
Gordon Botterill entering in the second half and stopping a pair, and one save for
Cody Aung in the extra period.Â
Next up for the Anteaters is the season opener on August 26. UCI's 2021 season begins on the road with a trip to No. 5 Georgetown followed by a meeting with Loyola Maryland on Sunday.
