Anteater Olympians: Both Sides Of The Games

Former UCI student-athletes Dan Klatt, Brian Thornton, Jay Glaser and John Vargas have all attended the Olympics both as a player and a coach.

Klatt, UCI women's water polo head coach, was an athlete on the 2004 U.S. men's water polo team then served as an assistant coach with the U.S. women's water polo team in 2012, 2016 and again in 2020. The U.S. women have captured the last two gold medals.

Thornton made his Olympic debut in 2016 as a member of the U.S. men's indoor volleyball team and will serve as an assistant for the team in Tokyo. Thornton, along with David Smith, were UCI's first two Olympians in the sport of men's volleyball. The duo were also member's of UCI's first national championship team in 2007.

Glaser, a sailing national champion and All-American at UCI, won silver as an athlete in Tornados at the 1984 Games then coached in 2000, 2004 and 2008. He helped the U.S. team of John Lovell and Charlie Ogletree to a silver medal in the Tornado class in 2004 and was named the 2000 U.S. Olympic Committee Sailing Coach of the Year. He served as head coach for the Netherlands and assistant coach for the USA.

Vargas competed for the U.S. men's water polo team in 1992, then was an assistant in 1996 before taking over as head coach in 2000. Vargas was a member of UCI's undefeated national championship team in 1982.
