Kayla Richardson concluded the 2021 season for the UC Irvine women's track & field team in the first round of the 100-meter dash at the NCAA West Preliminary Championships Thursday at E.B. Cushing Stadium.
Â
Richardson, who entered the meet seeded 48th in the 100m, beat her initial ranking as she placed 38th with a personal-record 11.57. She shaved eighth-hundredths of a second off her previous best.
Â
Richardson, a graduate transfer from USC, made an enormous impact in her one season with the Anteaters. She accounted for 20 individual points and contributed to 18 points in the relays at the 2021 Big West Championships. The Walnut, Calif., native was UCI's first double champion in the 100m and 200m at the conference meet in 30 years, while she was also part of the squad's first-place 4x100 and second-place 4x400. She was named the Big West Women's Track Athlete of the Meet for her effort.
Â
On the season, Richardson combined for six individual victories in the 100m (3) and 200m (3). A two-time Big West Track Athlete of the Week, Richardson established the No. 2 times in program history in both the 100 (11.57) and 200 (23.90).
This was Richardson's second career NCAA West Preliminary appearance as she advanced in the 400m as a freshman at USC in 2017.Â
