LOS ANGELES, Calif. -
The UC Irvine men's tennis team faced a daunting task in its second dual match of the 2021 season. The Anteaters, who were coming off a win at Loyola Marymount last weekend, made their way to No. 1 USC Friday afternoon where they dropped a 7-0 decision at Marks Stadium.

The Trojans (5-0) fielded three singles players and one doubles team that were featured in the most recent ITA/Oracle Rankings.

The 'Eaters (1-1) didn't back down from the challenge, putting up a fight in all three doubles matches. At No. 3, Matthew Sah and Jonathan Star went back-and-forth with Colter Smith/Lodewijk Weststrate before falling, 6-4. On court two, Mark Peneff and Thomas Smart took a 5-3 lead over the 50th-ranked duo of Mor Bulis/Stefan Dostanic, but the Trojans battled back for the 7-5 victory. It was a similar story at the top of the lineup as Bjorn Hoffmann and Bruce Man-Son-Hing came out of the gates strong, pulling ahead 4-1 and 5-3, before Bradley Frye/Riley Smith stormed back for the 7-5 triumph.

In singles, USC went up 2-0 with Frye defeating Smart, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4. Jeremy Merville then saw his seven-match win streak snapped with a 6-3, 6-1 loss to No. 104 Dostanic at the second spot. The Trojans then clinched the victory with Weststrate's win over Sah on court five.

In other action, Hoffmann held his own with 19th-ranked Riley Smith at No. 1, but came up short, 6-3, 6-4. Peneff also went up against No. 26 Mor Burlis at the third position (6-1, 6-4).
