UC Irvine Battles Back To Beat UC San Diego, 3-2

LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC Irvine battled back after trailing 1-2 to beat UC San Diego, 3-2 (25-15, 14-25, 22-25, 25-15, 15-11 at RIMAC Arena Tuesday.

The Anteaters improve to 11-4 overall and 4-1 in the Big West. UCI increases its winning streak to three straight, while snapping the Tritons' three-match streak. UCSD is 6-10 overall and 3-2 in league play.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>UCI was led by Joy Umeh with 17 kills. She has led the team in kills in each of the last four matches
>Middle blocker Onye Ofoegbu had 17.5 points on 12 kills, two aces and a match-best six total blocks
>Freshman Marianna Bertolone posted 11 kills and six digs
>Setter Kelly Negron had 31 set assists and nine digs, while setter Indy DeSmet recorded 20 set assists and a team and career-high 15 digs
>UCSD was led by Sabrine Karacaova with a double-double, including a team-high 16 kills and 12 digs

FIRST SET
>UCSD led 5-3 before the Anteaters had a pair of kills by Onye Ofoegbu and one by Marianna Bertolone to take a 8-6 lead
>The Anteaters went on a 6-2 run to take a 19-11 advantage
>UCI would commit just one hitting error all set and win 25-15. The Tritons would hit .070 (11-8-43) and have three service errors

SECOND SET
>UC San Diego went on a 6-0 run which included four straight Anteater errors, 7-3
>Two kills by Ofoegbu plus a Triton error got UCI as close as 6-8, but UCSD would score the next seven to break open the set, 15-6
>UCSD would control the set and win, 25-14
>The Tritons would have five blocks in the set as UCI hit -.031 (8-9-32)

THIRD SET
>A kill by Grace Colburn was followed by back-to-back blocks by Ofoegbu and Ellen Veargason, 7-4
>UCI would lead 11-7 before UCSD had two aces in a 4-0 run to knot the score at 11 all
>UCSD would hold a 18-16 advantage before Ofoegbu took over, adding two kills and a block with Veargason, tying the score again at 19-19
>The teams would trade points until the Tritons scored the final three points, all UCI errors to win 25-22

FOURTH SET
>Back-to-back aces by Kelly Negron helped UCI pull away 10-7
>Four Triton mistakes plus a Colburn kill and an ace by Carly Richter moved the lead to 18-10
>UCI would go on to win 25-18 to force a fifth set

FIFTH SET
>The Anteaters started with a block by Colburn and Soana Leaaa, 1-0
>A kill by Bertolone and two Triton attack errors, the last a block by Ofoegbu and Veargason, 6-3
>Kills by Bertolone and Ofoegbu ended the set 15-11

NOTES
>Opposite Ellen Veargason tied her career-high with five block assists for the third consecutive match
>Grace Colburn added on to her team leading ace total (15) with two against the Tritons
> Libero Carly Richter had 14 digs, tallying double-digit digs for the ninth time this season
>UCI had 10 blocks, the fourth time this season the Anteaters have had 10 or more blocks
