‘Eaters Edged by Spartans, 12-10

SAN JOSE, Calif. – No. 14 UC Irvine men's water polo dropped a 12-10 decision to No. 10 San Jose State in Golden Coast Conference action, Saturday afternoon at the SRAC.

UCI now stands at 0-2 in conference play and 7-9 overall. SJSU improves to 1-2 in the GCC and 10-12 on the season.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
> Kiyan Mohebbizadeh, Stewart Campbell and Dylan Patist led the 'Eaters with two goals each
> Thomas Cass, Grant Chiponis, Nikola Ilic and Zlatan Nikocevic each finished with one goal
> Harrison Land played the first three quarters in goal finishing with five saves while Jacob Pyle played the final eight minutes tallying one save
> SJSU's Yahav Fire made 16 stops in the cage while Bende Pardi scored four times
> UCI held a 32-29 advantage in shots

Quarter One
> The teams exchanged back-and-forth goals before SJSU went on a 3-0 run to go up, 4-1, with 3:35 remaining
> Patist fired in a goal at 2:19 to make it 4-2

Quarter Two
> The Spartans used a 3-0 run to go up, 7-2, with 4:22 left in the first half
> Mohebbizadeh scored at 4:00 to start a 3-0 scoring run for the 'Eaters to bring them within two, 7-5, at the half. Chiponis found the back of the net with just under a minute to play while Patist scored on a powerplay at the buzzer

Quarter Three
> SJSU would score at 6:09 before Cass and Nikocevic fired in back-to-back goals to bring UCI within one, 8-7, at 5:10
> Pardi answered with two-consecutive goals for the Spartans to extend their lead, 10-7

Quarter Four
> Campbell fired in a goal on a powerplay at 7:09 before SJSU scored twice to go up, 12-8, with 6:01 remaining
> Campebell found the back of the net again at 5:29 followed by a goal from Mohebbizadeh at 1:34 but it wasn't  enough as UCI fell, 12-10, at the final buzzer
