Akaegbu-Cleveland Receives Order of Merit Award

IRVINE, Calif. - Joy Akaegbu-Cleveland, who graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in sociology on Saturday, June 13, was a recipient of the UCI School of Social Sciences Order of Merit Award for 2020.

The Order of Merit is awarded annually to approximately 2% of the Social Sciences graduating class. Students are recognized not only for their academic excellence but also for original research, leadership activities and service contributions to the School of Social Sciences, UCI campus or community. Akaegbu-Cleveland was nominated for the award by Professor Catherine Bolzendahl.

"I would like to start by thanking God for his goodness in my life, and for keeping me alive to share my testimony with you," said Akaegbu-Cleveland. "Thank you to my family and friends for your love and support. I would also like to specifically acknowledge some important figures in my journey - Adebisi Adetoro, Rosemary Graham, Kevin Bradford, Catherine Bolzendahl, Tony Williams, Tamara Inoue and Cecilia Russell-Nava. These individuals have taught me valuable lessons about life and have impacted me in so many ways that I can't thank them enough.

"I was not born with a silver spoon in my mouth, and as a result, it has been ingrained in me that education is the key to success. Today, I can honestly say that in addition to education - hard work, perseverance, self-authenticity and kindness are the keys to success. It is important to be true to one's self. Staying focused, determined and setting high standards for yourself can get you where you want to be in life. I am speaking from experience. One semester, my GPA dropped immensely because I enrolled in four rigorous classes during basketball season. I was in disbelief. However, with dedication, and consistency, I was able to bring my GPA back up. Now, here I am today receiving this merit award. I am humbled and grateful. Let my experience be one that teaches you that regardless of the obstacles in life, if you continue to move toward your desired goals it will always be within your reach."

Akaegbu-Cleveland completed her first season with the UC Irvine women's basketball team in 2019-20. She had redshirted the 2018-19 campaign after transferring from Saint Mary's. Akaegbu-Cleveland will complete her final year of eligibility with the Anteaters as she is set to begin her graduate work toward a Master of Public Policy in UCI's School of Social Ecology.
